I just hit up an awesome Chinese buffet that had kickass sushi. Oriental Palace in Grandville, MI.

Yeah, who wouldn't expect a Chinese restaurant to have superb Japanese cuisine?

Er...

Sounds to me like you just went to a shitty sushi bar. In this day of fast shipping, the freshness of the fish is of little consequence as when properly packed, stored and shipped, it will stay quite good for several days. Sushi has far more to do with the quality of the chef. More than likely, you had crappy sushi from a crappy chef.

and by the way, since you contributed nothing to backup your claim that the midwest has bad sushi, your thread sucks as bad as your sushi.

Not always true either. Good fish makes good sushi. A good sushi chef makes it even better.

Probably just went to a bad spot. THe problem probably isnt as much about being landlocked as it is about having no asians around. It's not like sushi chefs in seattle only use fish caught in the northwest. Theres always fish being shipped in from all over. Just need to go to a quality place that buys the good cuts and has a good chef to prepare it

Ugh dammit, now i have a huge craving for salmon sashimi

actually Wa and Cafe Beautiful in Lawrence Kansas have a very good reputation amongst people I've spoken to that have eaten sushi on the west coast and in NYC at some good places.

even if its frozen well its a matter of the food being dumbed down for the locals..make it less scary type of deal

I can't say I've had a bad experience with the sushi bars here in central WI. However the best I've tasted was in D.C.

A good sushi chef won't prepare sushi with bad fish.

There's a Japanese restaurant here in Madison that has ok sushi. It's fucking expensive and doesn't even fill me up, though - I end up eating all the edamame after the meal.

Newsflash..

Kansas gets fresh sushi flown in daily just like thousands of other places in the world.

I haven't had much sushi in coastal states, so I don't have much of a frame of reference. I think the sushi is equal here in New Mexico to Ohio. As for regular seafood, I look forward to my visits to my family in Florida. Grouper is one of my favorite fishes, and they are rampant in the Gulf, so I notice a difference there. Really, I have only been into sushi for about 4 years, so I am not much of a connoisseur.

I think you've just described every sushi restaurant in the world. :D

I like:
Takumi (East Towne Mall)
Takara (State St)
Ginza
Edo Garden

Drat, I'm craving sushi now...and it's 1:22 AM. :(

Please don't tell me you are talking about Mikado! I got food poisoning there and would have liked to have died.

There is a good Korean place (I think) on McKinley that made pretty good (and cheap) sushi. Too bad my first time there was after I moved away.

Besides, South Bend has Polito's... what else do you need in life? Meat lovers stuffed slice FTMFW.

If any of you Americans had Chinese food...in China, you'd puke, cry and wet your pants. Chinese food in China sucks.
