Y'all minorities, come on down to the GOP, i got some fried chicken and potato salad for you, HYUCK HYUCK HYUCK!

What the hell is this guy's problem? He either acts like an awkward middle aged white guy trying to 'act black and hip hop' to impress his kids (not realizing he's embarrassing himself and everyone around him), or in cases like this, he succumbs to acting out racist stereotypes against black people. That 'y'all' is the most fake thing i've ever heard.

I almost half expect this guy to put on a minstrel jig and speak in shuck and jive one of these days. This guy is probably the worst attempt at the GOP to do a black outreach campaign.

Someone has to be the GOP token black after JC Watts got tired of being hauled out of the GOP warehouse only once every 4 years.

But its all hunkie dori now, Micheal Steele tried to get uppity once, but Rush Limbaugh soon set him straight.

Yes, the leader of the RNC acting like a white guy in black face playing out racist stereotypes of black people is not news worthy at all, you're so right OCguy.

Actually it would kind of make sense in the context of ATOT where i've seen similar jokes played out so it probably seems 'normal' to you.

I don't know how to describe it in words, but if there was ever a need to describe an awkward old white guy trying to act black, Michael Steele gives the greatest demonstrations whenever he goes into 'hip hop' mode. He's just not smooth and doesn't look comfortable doing it. It really seems forced.

Try to describe it in words. I want to read your definition of acting like a "white" guy while complaing about his stereotyping of blacks eating fried chicken.

That's the problem, there aren't too many pernicious stereotypes against whites like there are to blacks. Closest thing is the 'Black people drive like THIS and White people drive like THIS' routine, and i personally don't find that joke to be true in reality.

Also genx, you're conflating the 2 ideas of 'acting black' and acting out racist stereotypes, which i presented as two different ideas in the OP

So you cant describe yet freely used it in a description of what Steele looks like.

Woah...apparently you have never seen Pryor, Chappell, Mencia, "Kings of Comedy", or even the Blue Collar Comedy gang. They all perpetuate stereotypes about whites. And might I add, most are extremely funny.

I don't watch most them. I've seen Mencia a few times (his routines are racist AND unfunny AND a ripoff other artists).

Michael Steele is a) not a comedian and b) a poltician. so the comparison isn't valid.

I never said Michael Steele 'acted white'. I said he looked like an old awkward white guy trying to act black.

And again, you're conflating 2 things. "Acting black" or "acting white" are not necessarily racist or offensive, but acting out racist stereotypes is.

"Y'all come" - M. Steele

"Colin Powell is not a republican." - Limbaugh
"I didn't know Colin was a republican." - Cheney

"We don't want Arlen Specter in our party" - Just about every Rep

The disconnect is quite strong. Moderates are not welcome in the GOP. Specter voted with the Reps 65% of the time but that's apparently not enough. After he left and Sen Snowe, a fellow Rep moderate, mentioned that it's hard going for a moderate in today's GOP, the loud voices on the Right told her if she didn't like the party she should leave too. This is not big tent inclusiveness.

The GOP pres candidates didn't make it to one minority hosted debate. There was zero reachout. "Y'all come" is a nice sentiment, but why would anyone "come" to a party that is uber-rigid in ideology and shrinking in members and demographics?

GOP needs a reboot. Steele isn't strong enough or believeable enough to do it. They need someone else.

wow, phokus, stfu you cant take a joke for a joke? stereotypes exist for a reason, they were not just created from thin air. and i found it pretty funny, do politicians have to be serious at every second of their life? It was obvious the other kid made a joke so he made one back...

Of course stereotypes exist for a reason:

http://www.hokubei.com/files/images/mr.%20yunioshi.jpg

Sometimes they stem from a truth or a small truth and are turned into something bigger than it already is in order to put a race down or to compensate for ignorance about another race.

Or sometimes they may be something that really should be innocuous (like watermelon and fried chicken), but are turned into a negative that's used to put a race down.

Tell me, would it be beneficial for Barack Obama to start talking in jive and declaring his love of watermelon and fried chicken? Or would it be better that he stays true to himself, an intelligent and successful person who's still authentically black and doesn't play upon racist stereotypes? Who do you want black kids to look up to? Even conservatives said the good thing about Barack being president was that black kids could look up to him and aspire to achieve greatness. It's one thing for a low brow comedian to do it, it's another for someone in a position where they need to show some respectability.

Wow man, you have some extreme racial hangups. What in the absolute hell is "authentically black?"

Not really. You can disagree with Barack Obama's politics, but even many conservative commentators say that the positive of Obama's presidency is that black kids can look up to Obama and be something greater than their normal expectations would otherwise tell them.

As for, 'authentically black', it's someone who acts like a normal black person.

The bigger point is

"authentically black and doesn't play upon racist stereotypes"

meaning, being a normal black person without playing about the pernicious racial stereotypes associated with it.

I think he means like Michael Jackson. If Michael wasn't authentically black, then who is?

Please, humor us all and describe the "normal black person."

If you don't see the irony in you trying to stereotype what a "normal black person" would act like......
