The second generation of Neon is a huge improvement over the first, but it was to little, to late.
The peeling paint, headgasket problems and frameless windows did the line in.

I have about 60k miles on my '03 SXT, haven't had any problems. The new Caliber does look really promising. There will definetly be an SRT-4 version, possibly will all-wheel drive. Here's a good link talking about the Caliber...

Good riddance to bad crap.

Ugly, horribly built, bad safety rating, a death trap, and disgusitng colors. Not to mention too many cheapskates buy them and put fart cans on them to make it seem like they bought a real car. News flash. It's over. In about 2-5 more years, I doubt I'll see another on the road as they will all have finally be beyond repair in terms of maintance costs, or will turn in death traps for their owners. Yay!

I've always hated Neons because too many people that drove them thought they looked good and would put more money into them than the car was worth.

Wake up. At least Civics look nice if you do it right. Neons ALWAYS look like sh1t.

Good riddance.

I have one and I can tell you that it has been overall a trouble free car.

Head gasket @ 72K that Dealer replaced for $200.'

That was it.

Paint is peeling on the back windows. But Hey I bought it 6 years ago for 5K and it still gets me to work everyday.

Ya, on the first gen, the head gasket would invariably fail. It wasnt a matter of if, but a matter of when. Plus, its horrfically ugly.

The 2nd gen is a different story. I like mine. :) Pretty roomy for a small car, engine is good for its class/price, and it rarely gives me any problems. Good highway mileage. Handles very well too with good tires...I throw this this car around corners at speeds that would make most cringe, and the tires dont even squeak. If theres any squeaking, its from the people in the back seats nursing their new head wounds.

What the heck. I searched for neon when I started a thread on this topic, but it never found this thread.

Anyway, the new Calibre looks pretty sweet. I hope it turns out for Dodge.

That's alone is enought to call it unreliable. My corolla has 120k with only struts and engine mount replacement and my integra has 165k with no problem also. Nowadays any engine or transmission related problem under 120k is considered unacceptable.

I love when people say this and then I'm stuck behind a Civic/Integra that's just spewing smoke all over the place and the entire back of the car is covered in oil.

On the contrary! The new line is total badassness.

Goodbye Neon! You will always hold a place in my memory, no matter how bad it is. :)

For the 2000 model year it went through a redesign. It used the same engine, but a new chassis, suspension components (Same geometry though). New interior...

Yep. everyone hates the affordable reliable car for some reason. I'll never understand it.

I am loving my car at almost 5 years old. completely problem free.

Everyone probably hates them since they're faster and handle better than civics/corollas...

much. more standad HP as well.. agreeable by just about anyone that it's not as well built as a toyota, but it's better built than a GM no question about it. but when buying a cheap car like the neon, one shouldn't expect industry leading quality throughout the entire car for the most part. anyways, i regular on neons.org, and a few other local and canada wide neon clubs, and i have nothing but good things to say about these cars in general. for what you pay, you get a reliable, fun to drive car, and when done right, they can look good. for the person who said they just can't look good, that's not fair. I always make sure my car is done CLEAN and SIMPLE... and unless you hate anything that's modified, you'd think my car looks clean and nice. lowered, simple rims, modified stock dual exhaust, de-badge, and de-wing. that's about it for exterior mods.

Could've fooled me.
The body shape looks almost identical, except for minor changes to headlights and wheels.

It's getting replaced with the oxygen. Should be popular with the over 60 crowd.

Hadn't heard about this, sad the SRT-4 will die.

:(

[EDIT]Though I must admit the Caliber looks like a nice replacement... I assume they'll put the SRT-4 engine in at some point, that would be quite a bit more useful than the current SRT-4.[/EDIT]
