I think we can all leave that poor guy alone now.... Wherever he is.

I thought I cleared up the reason why he learned the limit of CPU's at 3.0 GHz. Don't make my post go to waste, that took a lot of work. Because of the 0.13 micron process, and possibly new materials the new CPU theoretical "limit" is around 6-7 GHz. And if they make more improvements, that will change. However, using OLD technology, yes they are physically limited to 2 GHz, 3 GHz or whatever.

I just have to throw in I've always been irritated with this problem in trade/technology schools in that they may teach you skills and facts, but rarely teach you how to seriously think on your own. Just had to say that.

<< Someone with just schooling and certifications would make around $18,000-$30,000(if lucky) in Calgary. I have three years experience with MCSE and I am valued around $40,000-$60,000. I do Tier 2 desktop support. >>

18K???? I don't think there's any FT IT jobs in Calgary that pay that little. I'd say 40K is about as low as companies pay these days over here. I know for sure you'd never get anyone hired FT if you paid them 18K.

If he came from Harvard. Maybe, just maybe he could change the laws of physics. You should have just started laughing when he said DeVry.

What you get paid on a job also has to do with the area you live in. If you are working in New York city, you may start out at 30-40 a year because the living expenses are higher. However that after those living expenses becomes around 15-20 a year.

Harvard is known for their law not their physics. MIT would be the physics deparment. ;)

People who are certified usually dont know what the heck they are talking about. All the best techs I know are self taught and never went to any trade schools.

Hey, I can see it now, big 3" letters for the headline.

"Overclockers Defy The Laws Of Physics" Too bad it'd be a P4 and not an Athlon, but hey, can't have everything even in humorous little musings to one's self.

These barriers are effective only for a certain gate width's. That is why we continue to drop the gate width and that is why Intel, Motorola and all the other companies spend $$$'s in R&D. So just because the guy said there is a ~3GHz barrier for .25u doesn't mean that this is the barrier for semiconductor technology. My semiconductors professor calculated the barrier for .18u as something like 15GHz. Of course, it will not reach that because of a lot of assumptions, heat and inperfections in the die. That is of course why we are going to .13u with the Tualatin and the Thoroughbred.

Man, this is going WAYYY off topic, but this post is so long, might as well... =)

Go check what is the best Law school, Yale beats all the others by the long shot. And in the end, Yale rules and harvard sucks. =P

(Kinda a biased opinion since i go to yale)

There are a lot of fresh students in Calgary that would work for nothing(Co-op). Low end positions such as Roll-Outs and such do pay as low as that. The bare minimum for an IT guy in Calgary is about 30,000. Companies such as EDS systemhouse and Compugen start their new people at around $30,000, $18,000 is the lowest I have seen. I have about three years experience in the industry and have worked in over 5 different buildings in downtown. I have made anything from $10 an hour to $25, depending on which consultant company I have worked for. You may be talking about employee positions. However, the majority of IT people in Calgary are outsourced.

Humor me. How did your P2 get to 3 GHz? i'm sure many people on this forum would like to know too.

Well..., that's just about the most assanine thing I have ever heard. Granted, If we keep doubling speed every 18 mos. silicon will run into its limit on doping yeilds in around 15 years, but.... 2Ghz, thats just dumb.
