I always thought the difference between a hookah and a bong is that a hookah has many tubes coming out for many people to hit the bong at once, whereas only one person at a time could hit a regular bong. Oh well, you learn something every day! I still smoke marijuana (as opposed to flavoured tobacco) out of my hookah though .

that's the way I have always understood it. I've seen bongs turned into hookash with a rubber cork and some rubber tubing, for flavored tobacco of course

A water bong a 1 tube apparatus that is pretty much 1 person at a time. My friend had a true 6 footer. Hit it from my bunk once. rolled back over and slept wonderfully

Wrong, what is smoked out of the device has nothing to do with what it is called. A hookah is a pipe with one or more tubes and a bowl on top going down into the chamber. A bong is a long tube with the bowl on the side.

You are quite right but the reason nobody uses (or hardly anyone) hookas for pot smoke is because they are meant for slow burning tobacco to be leisurely smoked because it will smolder, pot has a tendancy to put itself out and must be forced to burn.

When I was in my twenties one of my buddies (shout out to Ski!) had a bong he called the "Kong Bong", it was three 2 1/2 foot sections of connecting PVC pipe that he kept in his trunk that worked just like a Graphix (standard among long bongs)

one last story, also around that time three of us went in on a $40 electric waterpipe that was like two round fishbowls with a rubber interface between them that held the stem sitting on a wood base with an electic fish pump pushing air into the top fishbowl so the smoke went through the water in the bottom one out to two hoses with oxygen style facemasks. We named it Dain Brammage.

Yep, those are hookahs, and there is no reason they would be illegal in the US. In fact, last time I was at A Little Taste of Cuba in New Hope, they had a number of very nice ornate hookahs that I really wanted to get, and some awesome flavored tobaccos, but at $150 for the inexpensive single hose models I decided to pass.
For now.

Well technically water pipes and bongs are legal in the US too. You just can't use them for anything other than tobacco.

Yeah, that's pretty much why. The only time a hookah is used for cannabis consumtpion (maybe besides the single tube models, but then.. it's just a really fancy bong) is at a party.

One night some buddies of mine went up to UofM to see a Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jeff Beck show. (awesome show) and we hooked up with some of their stoner friends from UofM. We proceeded to toke up all night and the following morning, while they told me plenty of hilarious stories of all their great times stoned, etc... The funniest bit was when the one guy was holding the bong and proclaiming "If this bong could talk, oh the stories it could tell!"

They have hookahs like the ones to the left and right of thos guys at the local head shops, haven't seen one as big as the middle one yet.

As cool as they look though, they are kinda impractical.

There's two different things: a "hookah" and a "shisha". One of them has just one hose, and the other one has multiple hoses. I've forgotten which is which, though. The only kind I've ever seen/used just had one hose (and they called it a "shisha"). One of the guys in my dorm used to stink the place up every Friday night. No, it wasn't pot, it was (mostly strawberry) flavored tobacco. It kind of smelled good sometimes, but other times it was just annoying. Everybody would go in his room (one of the biggest in the dorm) and pass the hose around and drink. This guy had brought his back from his trip to Egypt. The next year, a Turkish friend of mine had one in his room.

(BTW shisha = the only time I've ever consumed tobacco in any form) (and it was pretty damn good too )
