I don't think they should be killed and eaten but if that's the culture fine. But someone should look at the video of way they kill them. It's like the most inhumane thing they could do to a dolphin.

That's is the WHOLE POINT of this topic. They kill them and half the people here are unhappy and the other half isn't. Uh, sure they are. Furthermore it IS the perceived intelligence of an animal that most influences whether we are ok with eating them or not, with the only real barrier being that we are mostly opposed to cannibalism which is why I would never eat my hypothetical cousin with DS.

I have no problem with killing dolphins until I really start thinking about it. What if a dolphin is smart enough to feel betrayed by those who it thought were friendly to it? What if it feels a kind of horror that is on a close order to what we would feel if we saw our families being slaughtered mercilessly? Thinking like that almost makes me ashamed of those of my species that kill dolphins.

But then again dolphins might just be fish that look like they're smiling all the time, which automatically makes us relate to them and imagine intelligence that isn't there. Who knows? It's not a problem that'll ever be solved by busybody rich kids with too much time on their hands anyway.

I think the real point of this topic is:

Yet another semi-famous and somewhat influential person decides to ignore all the human problems and suffering in this world (and in her own country) and instead gets side tracked by a group of surfing stoners into saving a fish (mammal, Einstein with flippers, ect.). And in the process she is trying to deny some dirt poor fishermen and their families the right to make a living and survive over what she sees as bad. To her, Dolphins are so cute since she bought the Flipper reruns on DVD. She also loves to decorate her mansion and limousine with them. She even has anatomically correct stuffed ones she sleeps with in bed while she tosses and turns in her skimpy cheerleader PJ's!

In the REAL WORLD (not her T.V. fantasy HEROES one) she has got no solutions to the poor fishermen's plights, she has not thought that far ahead, she just wants them to "STOP IT NOW, BY GOLLY! BECAUSE ME AND MY SURF BUDS SAY SO!" She is completely unconcerned about those fishermen's families, or any other human related aspect of her protesting. This is P.E.T.A. 101 she is drawing her protesting tactics from. Screw the humans, save the amoebas! If she actually used her brains, she would make a lot more headway there (and a lot less headlines over here) going over there as some sort of rational spokesperson (without the surfer stoner club in tow) and talking to the Japanese leaders and the fishermen, rather than simply enraging them and staging a media circus to make them all look bad. I wouldn't be surprised if the Japanese refuse her entry next time.

Just wait till those same fishermen show up at her next filming for Heroes protesting her lack of acting talent and the pain and torture she puts us through with every episode of her prancing around in that skimpy, tight cheerleaders outfit while making all the males very uncomfortable!

If she really wants to help mother nature, I got 1 word for her - PENTHOUSE! :lips:

Plain and simple it is about looks, especially for clueless hollywood celebs. Dolphins = cute and cuddley (slippery). Same goes for seals = cute/furry, dogs=cute/furry. No one has any problem against chickens and turkeys; even well groomed, they looks like birds out of hell. All domesticated animals are pretty ugly to begin with and don't really conform to ideal cuteness (fur).

Seeing as how they've been doing it for a while now and they actually use them for food, whatever. Just hope they have quotas and aren't screwing up their numbers too much.

Then what the hell are you arguing? Your first few posts were an attempt to explain away that maybe they were really just harvesting mahi-mahi, and that journalistic liberties were taken to make everyone cry about dolphins.

If you are opposed to this, please state one good reason WHY and how dolphins are different from other animals various cultures including us consume today.

There was another video on the dolphin slaughter which actually showed the fisherman torturing the dolphins; something about releasing adrenaline or something that makes the dolphin meat tastier. I wish I could find it but in either case it showed these animals being led to deaths so agonizing that it makes the Spanish Inquisition look like a stubbed toe. if you're gonna kill animals for food, do it quick and easy.
