the furthest planet/object in our solar system (Pluto) is only 3.2B miles from us.
and It took Voyager 12.5yrs to reach and, recently, the New Horizons satellite took 9 1/2 yrs (2015)

1 light year is approximately 5.88 TRILLION miles. Roughly 1837 times farther than Pluto<--> Earth.

Fckng mind boggling distances.

Which are planets and which are suns?


I believe everything from Jupiter on up is considered to be a star? (although the line between "star" and "gas-giant" planet is a little hazy anyway)

I could be mistaken and feeling too lazy to look it up right now. 🙂

Stars have fusion.
For reference.
With a mass only 93 times that of Jupiter (MJ), or .09 M☉, AB Doradus C, a companion to AB Doradus A, is the smallest known star undergoing nuclear fusion in its core.[11] For stars with similar metallicity to the Sun, the theoretical minimum mass the star can have, and still undergo fusion at the core, is estimated to be about 75 MJ.[12][13] When the metallicity is very low, however, a recent study of the faintest stars found that the minimum star size seems to be about 8.3% of the solar mass, or about 87 MJ.[13][14] Smaller bodies are called brown dwarfs, which occupy a poorly defined grey area between stars and gas giants.

I vaguely recall from astronomy classes that brown dwarfs, failed stars, begin at like 80-100 times the mass of Jupiter.

Astronomers have spotted three near-Earth asteroids that were lurking undetected within the glare of the sun. One of the asteroids is the largest potentially hazardous object posing a risk to Earth to be discovered in the last eight years.
One of the asteroids, called 2022 AP7, is 1.5 kilometers (0.9 miles) wide and has an orbit that could bring it within Earth’s path in the future, but it’s difficult for the scientists to know when.

A near-Earth asteroid measuring 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) or larger “would have a devastating impact on life as we know it,” he said. Dust and pollutants would fill the atmosphere for years, cooling the planet and preventing sunlight from reaching Earth’s surface.
“It would be a mass extinction event like hasn’t been seen on Earth in millions of years,” Sheppard said.
