The problem with the Ipod is it isn't designed to be used as it is used and marketed which is apples fault.

Did you know the Zune's WiFi doesn't work as it is marketed? "Welcome to the social" what? Three listens and you're out? You can't even use it for anything else. How about Microsoft screwing their own customer base by not using PlaysForSure?

Honestly, some of the arguments "presented" in this thread make me sick. I'm not a fan of either the iPod or any other music player, but I am a fan of logic and rationality.

Ive seen plenty of well-taken care of iPods die for no apparent reason. Screens go black, batteries die, sad mac face on startup (dead HD). For the price premium you would expect Apple to build them with premium hardware, but they dont.
Apple doesn't build the products... Foxconn, builds many of them... hard drives are thanks to Toshiba, Seagate, and Hitachi... LCD screens occationally die, but most are because of dropping and abuse.

Why does it matter who builds the iPod and what components it uses? Ultimately, It's still an Apple iPod, a single finished product that users expect reliability and quality from. Faults in quality due to poor choice of components are still Apple's fault. For example, would you still accept a car that broke down frequently just because the parts were made by a different company? (weak analogy)

Nonetheless, I have an iPod nano 4gb (1st gen) and I couldn't be happier with it. It's never had any problems, so I too, blame the end user.

edit: cavingjan already addressed what I just said:
Apple is still responsible for the manufacturing. It is their product. They can pass the buck to the assembler all they want but at the end of the day, Apple's name is placed on it and it becomes their responsiblity to asure that their comtractors are doing their job correctly.

I'd introduce you to my fist, but unfortunately the internet doesn't work that way! (just kidding of course... hope you can take a joke!)

And to whoever said you can buy a computer for $300... haha... you can buy a computer, but it'll have onboard everything (great for emails and notepad, but useless for pretty much everything else)

Anyways, it's clear that nobody likes to take responsibility for anything anymore. I guess next time I drop my laptop I should call up IBM and start bitching because I'm the idiot who couldn't hold onto it and my $1200 investment is ruined!

Great logic... I think the gene pool needs some general cleaning.

To each his own... fortunately the iPod does what I need it to, doesn't get scratched (I have a case, because I'm apparently the only person who likes to protect my investments) and I make money off of the people who obviously have no appreciation or sense of value out of the items they own... keep abusing them and keep them coming my way... I'll take care of it when Apple tells you to piss off.

Apostrophe.
Well maybe his only friend is the Apostraphe and he just wanted to share him.

Either way I say no.

i agree with you completely. i have my iPod mini (got it a couple of day after the 2G ones came out, in Feb 2005) and it is still going strong. the battery easily lasts me 14 hours. the screen doesn't have a single scratch. it does have one small dent that was my fault. i dropped it. i will admit that maybe the anodized aluminum used is not such a strong material, but still, if you take care of your iPod, it will last you a long time.
I personally think the Minis were incredibly well built... of course reliability can suck on them because of the fragile microdrives, but aside from that there really aren't that many issues with 2G Minis.

1G Minis are a different story... their logic board can muck up and then cause static and playing problems. Plus battery life and the occasional grounding issue that causes the battery to last for about 10 to 20 minutes max, even if you have a brand new one.

Aside from that if they had a higher storage capacity, I'd personally use one... I do whenever I go biking though.

i have mine and love it. my friend ruined his HD some how and i'm planning on buying a new one (from your site ofcourse. 😉) to fix it. the one annoying thing about it is the battery. when it turns on, it takes it a few seconds to recognize the battery level. so sometimes the battery will be full and it will suddenly turn of telling me the battery is weak. so i turn it on and let it recognize the correct battery level. greatest thing i ever baught and only cost me $180!

Well they're obviously cheaper on eBay... cheapest I've found them are for around $42... I sell mine on my store for $70 or $90 installed...
