For $300 I expect the battery to last more than a year, i don't see any of my other appliences dying off in 12months. If you're buying new batteries for your laptop every xmas, something is wrong with that machine...

Also scratches are a problem - for a device that's intended to be carried inside your pocket, that's unacceptable. Form over function is idiotic, especially if the form goes away after a couple of weeks of use. Not to mention that your argument rests on top of a false analogy...

Also too much humidity or sweat can break the screen? This is why I didn't buy an iPod...

Ive seen plenty of well-taken care of iPods die for no apparent reason. Screens go black, batteries die, sad mac face on startup (dead HD). For the price premium you would expect Apple to build them with premium hardware, but they dont.

It's $249 now... The reason I have to replace my battery is because I go through a huge amount of cycles, because I use my laptop a lot plugged in and then not plugged in (it's a laptop, I occationally move it!)

Put a zune in your pocket, or how about a creative zen... I bet it'll get scratched.

And as for sweat... sweat wont kill your iPod, unless you let a huge amount of sweat drip onto your clickwheel.

Protect your $249 investment... put it in a case! (they're less than $30 on ebay for a really nice evo3 iSkin)

Apple doesn't build the products... Foxconn, builds many of them... hard drives are thanks to Toshiba, Seagate, and Hitachi... LCD screens occationally die, but most are because of dropping and abuse.

Ipods sell so well for the same reason Razr's do. Very good marketing, and it looks good to most people. They made it trendy, and made it something people desire, and many people want a new one because it's cool and "in". Do they break easily? Yeah they do, however so does the Razr, people will just keep buying them anyhow...

Pfft, I saved money with my iRiver. It's been dropped, stepped on, dragged down a set of stairs, rained on, and even gotten electrical shock. It works better than the day I bought it....

I agree with Paulson entirely on this, they really aren't "bad" at all, I don't know anyone that's had issues with their's.

wetcat007 - how long after buying it was the issue? What happened? How do you know it wasn't their issue? If it's under warranty, I think Apple is pretty good about that - an AT member got his car into a ditch and the iPod was damaged, but they still honored the warranty and sent him another IIRC.

Ok, so you found that you like that product more. Does it mean that the iPod is bad? No, not at all. Price? Maybe some like the design of it, some could like that it's from a brand that they've heard of a lot more, some will want it because it matches their notebook, etc.

Not every user wants the best "bang for your buck" item, some will want it just because they want it and not question it at all, especially when so many others own it.

I'm not saying the iPod is a bad product, it's just that I always find that anything delicate that goes beyond my desk gets broken.

Great argument... the iRiver doesn't have a hard drive... let me throw my iPod nano down the stairs... I'm sure it will be absolutely fine!

drizzle some water over it or fall on it while it's in your pocket... I'm sure it'll be fine!

When will MS start implementing it for accessing your own music library at home through WMP11? What about video through it too?

WiFi between what? I haven't researched it much, but I believe WiFi is only between two Zunes... and hell would probably freeze over before you found someone else with one ;)

No, not correct... the smaller 5GB & 6GB versions have seagate microdrives, however the 20GB version is a toshiba or hitachi... I'd bet you $100.

Microdrives only have an 8GB hard drive at the moment... I know because I have two seagates.

Ugh, I've popped my H10 open to check the revision...? I do know what I saw inside of it.

I've put my dell dj in my pocket with my keys, and I can only see one scratch on it.

Likewise my cell phone only has one scratch on it, and that's from when I slipped on some ice.

I think apple really needs to use a more durable plastic, from what I've seen.

The plastic on my IBM thinkpad has cracked in multiple places... guess it's time to bitch and moan about it!

I'm off to start another thread! (not)

Seems like people love to bash apple products just because they're in... I've never had any of my personal iPods go belly up on me and I'm sure I'd like my iPod much better than an iRiver.

Bill Gates himself stated that the Zune is "Future Proof"

The only thing that stands between the Zune and 40% market share is a well placed firmware update.

Rumored Plans:

-Xbox Live Stat Tracking

-Access to the Zune music store through Wifi

-Access to Podcasts through Wifi

-Games (Xbox Live compatibility; points; multiplayer)

-Office Reader Mobile (Present Powerpoints from the device using an AV Cable)

-USB Drive use

-More codecs

Agreed. I have one and I completely agree with this...I do have to say their warranty service has been exceptional for me.
