:) nah, just pointing out that PS3 owners are buying as many new games per console sold as 360 owners are, i.e. they aren't just using the console for blu-ray.

The PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide so over time it could catch up to the 360 in total units and in game sales, something HD-DVD never showed any signs of doing.

Sounds an awful lot like the hope and logic behind HD-DVD fans. And yes HD-DVD at one point was outselling Blu-Ray players and even had pretty good sales on new releases as well. Some of the Harry Potter titles were something like 55:45 Blu Ray.

Anyways time will tell if it catches up. They have a lot of catching up to do right now if that list was correct. I can understand losing but a ~25:2 deficit on 1 million+ titles is an beatdown.

No its not. According to this website there are around 17 million xbox360s and 8 million ps3s. This site has the xbox360 version of COD4 selling 330k in january vs the ps3 selling 144k. The attach ratio of the game is pretty close. You cant possibly expect an extremely successful console that has been out a year ahead of the PS3 to sell the same amount of software units when there are 2X the consoles.

Sony recently stated they have sold over 10million PS3's worldwide, and that comment was made more meaningful by stating sold to consumer, not sold to retail outlets.
Still, they are currently behind, but are also a year behind. Sure, so is the Wii, but the Wii is also a freak that's appealing to way more than gamers. Nintendo was genius for creating the Wii, but it's not comparable to 360/PS3, whereas the GCN was supposed to be comparable to the PS2/XBOX.

On another note, I do see the PS3 selling significantly more units in the US than the 360 by time this generation is done. The PS3 still has the playstation brand name going for it, and many people have specified intentions to purchase once the price is reasonable and library picks up. This year, I think the PS3 is going to outsell the 360 (in terms of units sold throughout 2008, not total units sold). I see that happening due to a huge line-up of exclusives, and a potential price drop to 299. That's going to be a magic number. Even more magical will be a price of 199, which will probably result in astronomical sales of PS3s, as by that point the fire will be raging and the library will be packed with AAA titles, especially AAA exclusives. That may be 2009, possibly late 2009 before 199 is hit for PS3. Regardless, there are still hit PS franchises exclusive to the brand, either due to SCEA/E/J brand ownership or third-party developers very friendly with Sony.
Don't get me wrong, the 360 will sell great too, and has quite a few exclusive titles. I think this generation, there will be more multi-console homes than there ever has been. This is one segment of the economy that will not really be hurt, as repeatable entertainment is something people love throwing money into.
I honestly think, as the price continues to drop... by the end of this generation, PS3 sales may just match PS2 sales. That'd be an accomplishment given the lackluster start, even though they may indeed reach their original goal of 11m units by the end of their fiscal year (end of March?). Shall be interesting to watch.

Do people really download HD movies on XBL? I would love to see the sales data on that.

"Xbox Live is already the No. 1 source of downloadable high-def content," says Rosoff.

Even if this is true I'm willing to bet you that the # of people who download hi-def movies (entire movie not clips) pale in comparison to those who purchase HDM. If this was microsoft strategy all along why didn't they include Terabyte hard drives in the 360? The download once, view and delete scheme wouldn't catch on at least not in the forseeable future. By not having a BD addon MS potentially lose out on a lot of revenue. Scratch out one reason why a person should not buy a PS3. Plus, they would have sold a lot more BD addon vs the HD DVD addon due to the reigning of one HD format.

This might seem a bit odd, at least the first two paragraphs.

Reuters
High definition DVDs expected to take off
Mon Mar 3, 2008

LONDON (Reuters) - Watching movies on high definition DVDs is expected to take off in 2008 following the resolution of a format war which had divided and confused consumers, a survey said on Monday.

The 2008 Digital Entertainment Survey said watching HD DVDs was expected to have the highest rate of growth in 2008 compared with any other form of entertainment.

Actually, I'll bet HD DVDs see the highest rate of growth - clearance prices for HD DVD players and disks, while BD players and movies rose in price.

A little off topic, but, I was at a BB yesterday, to get another A30 for 50 bucks (open box, minus the 2 HD dvds, of course) and noticed they had at least 100 BD I Am Legend piled up on a special cardboard stand in the center isle for that movie. I kind of doubt that they are going to sell through that inventory at retail price in the next few MONTHS, yet I bet the studio will report some insane record sales for that title in the next few days.

The only customers I saw buying I Am Legend were buying SD DVDs. Meanwhile, they purposefully delayed the release of I Am Legend on HD. I guess they didn't want the HD version outselling BD again when released on the same day. The studios and the retailers are obviously playing marketing games with HD and BD still.

Also, this BB just had BD titles recently restocked all over the store, filling up the display space, but the customers in the store wanting HD movies were looking at HD titles, not BD ones. So tell me again how BD is AMAZINGLY outselling HD titles again? However, one teenager was in there looking at BD titles with his mom, while she complained about the high prices, while he saw me with 4 HD titles in my hand, and a big grin on my face. Who's the sucker? I guess it depends on the point of view.

But Toshiba also wanted some new manufacturing technology rights from SONY, and just like the whory studios before them chomped at the bit to get what they wanted cheap and also dumped HD. Toshiba screws the loyal HD consumers as hard as Sony does. Too bad another reputable company not sleeping with and infected with STDs from Sony hasn't fully stepped up to the plate to support the mature and superior HD-DVD technology. Just keep on buying new BD disks that won't work on your BD players and consoles, fanboys, and waiting for the bug fixes to play them. Pretty expensive investments there in BD coasters while you wait some day to play them. I Am Legend might make a KILLER drink coaster, and it's got a scratch proof coating! NOW YOU FINALLY FIGURED OUT WHY!

Meanwhile, on the BB website they were offering a lot of Universal titles for $10.49. Funny thing about that was, online all these stores and the warehouse would show out of stock on ALL of these movies listed. But going to multiple BB stores proved many titles were in stock with up to 5-7 titles of some "out of stock" HD movie titles. Of course the selection varied by store. By going to multiple nearby BB stores over the course of a few days, I was able to get most of the "out of stock" HD titles I wanted on the $10.49 list.

The other crazy thing was the fact these select titles were not marked as $10.49 in the stores. At the checkout you only got the 30% off retail HD deal unless you made them do a price check at the customer service desk. Pretty shady marketing practices there, huh?

Funny how that wacky "out of stock" BB inventory system is favoring BD titles, isn't it?

I was at a BB yesterday, to get the new releases I Am Legend, No Country for Old Men, Gattaca, Hitman, I, Robot, Independence Day, Dan in Real Life, and Dogma. You should check them out, I really think you'd enjoy watching them on your HD-A30.

Congratulations on being able to buy movies on the cheap.

The difference between you and I is, I do not need to make up delusions to be happy with my purchases. :D

Congratulations on being able to buy movies on the cheap. Perhaps if you were willing to spend the money and buy them at full price, just might have made a difference in saving your format. Too bad, though. Your penny pinching directly helped the big bad evil Sony take over.

You had the opportunity to make a difference and chose not to. So now you blame everyone else.

You are such a SONY troll here, it just hurts. You seek out and squat in all the HD threads someone makes way past the point of sanity. In case you missed the memo "yo de B-way winar" so enjoy your many BD coasters while you wait for updates to play those BDs, umkay?

I make a few observations, and yet you just keep trying to get another thread closed, like you have before, is that right? Are you that sadly desperate to quash any disention? Or do you just enjoy arguing and kicking a "dead" format when it's down for fun? Like you do in the rest of your miserable life?

And BTW, PS3 genius, I didn't even have a decent HDTV or need a high def format in time to make a difference in this "HD war in your head". I only had a good HDTV for 4 months now, not that it's any of your business in the first place. And I dont plan on rebuying all 800 of my SD DVDs on B-way, either. The A30 also makes an excellent upscaler, or did you convieniently forget that fact for arguments sake?

But still you just can't help thread crapping anywhere you are about B-way and people supposedly throwing good money away buying HD movies. My "penny pinching" did not have a thing to do with it. Sounds like you are a bit bitter at stupidly paying retail price for your B-ways coasters. Too bad I didn't have billions of dollars to buy B-way off or any billion dollar tech Toshiba wanted to trade to keep the superior, mature format HD-DVD alive. I never claimed to be Donald Trump in this HD war, Ivana.

Sony thanks you for being a good little Sony ho, anyhow.

And talk about deluded. I cant even finish a post with a quote from you, before you change your post again.

Not that it matters but a dead format managed to lose 65:35 last week. Which was about the avg for 2007.

I havent see the sales volumes of players or discs since early Feb. The last one I saw had sales off by 50% since the beginning of January.

Yes, you do make observations. A lot of them. The conclusions you draw from these observations are not even close to being right. There's plenty of data out there that says so. You dismiss it all as paid Sony marketing BS. You are lying to yourself. Have fun with your bargain HD-A30 when new HD releases dry up shortly. But hey, like the recently fired Universal VP Ken Graffeo once said, it's still a great upscaling dvd player.

Enjoy it while you can. I find it hard to believe that you can get almost twice what you are paying though. Those fire sales are all over. Stores by me are just about out of their HD-DVD supply though, so who knows.
