Toshiba has a press conference scheduled at 5PM in Japan in what looks to be the official end of HD-DVD.

I imagine we will see announcements from Paramount and Universal tomorrow as they will most likely be released from their future HD-DVD obligations. Also I truly wonder if Warner will release any more non-pressed HD-DVD's through June as originally planned (I doubt it).

just to clarify.. 3am/12am EST/PST

I just read the news on a chinese website rumoring that Toshiba's announcement this evening in Japan on its plans to drop HD-DVD. Looks like its gonna be official. I wonder when Transformers will be out on BD?

And so the war has ended and I picked the losing format. Oh well, at least the player upconverts and I didn't spend too much.

are you talking about sony's final nail for Toshiba's coffin or you referring to Sony's coffin? your statement could be construed either way...

It was a running joke in the console war threads that this or that piece of bad news was the "final nail in the coffin" for the PS3.

Of course the PS3 outsold the 360 in the US in January '08, and has been outselling it outside the US for months, so mentioning final nails now is a sarcastic dig at the Sony-haters predicting PSdoomed.

It's attributed to the Premium and Elite consoles being OOS/in short supply moreso than Sony just flat out finally turning the tide in the U.S.

The PS3 does have a very solid lineup gamewise, with the 360 having a weaker lineup, but still expect the 360 to beat the PS3 in sales at least 50% of the year.

guess I missed all of the threads about the final nail for the PS3 then...

I have only seen the 'final nail' reference to HD DVD (about Blockbuster, Target, WB, Best Buy, Walmart, etc)...

True, PSN is still much weaker than Live (though free instead of $40-50 year) and the 360 library is still much bigger.

I wouldn't be surprised either to see the 360 outselling the PS3 for much of the year in the US, but the PS3 is no longer plummeting down towards 0 like it was early last year.

Yes, very true. In regards to my comment above - I meant a solid lineup gamewise this year with a lot of big releases coming out, much like the 360 did last year with it's killer lineup. I don't think the PS3 will match the 360 in terms of installed base in the US, now or ever, but it will definitely pickup on sales.

I'm tempted to actually finally buy my first PS(any number) just for the Blu-Ray and the occasional game I'm tempted to play...but will probably wait till it drops down in price a bit before jumping on it. (Or just wait for a cheap BR player to come out)

Well folks, this thread had plenty of tread and was good while it lasted. It was the only reason i visited A/V/HT. Hope to see you guys in OT soon.

Heard the PS3's software sales pale in comparison to the 360s and Wii.

Somebody on the AVS forums posted the list of games which sold over 1 million. The 360 had about 25 in the list and the PS3 had 2. And they brought up an interesting point.
Sony captured the HDM market at the expense of their console market. Blown away in software sales and the #3 console in hardware shipments.

Should be interesting to see if they manage to make it worth their while in the long term.

It's selling well in the US for its market share -- the 360 sells 2-3x as many of a title, but with 3x the consoles sold.

In the Europe/other market the not-always-reliable VHChartz has the PS3 selling just as many units as the 360 for cross-platform games like COD4 and Assassin's Creed, despite the 360 having a 1 million console lead (with the PS3 closing in at about 80K/month).

The PS3 should outsell the 360 in the US for this month as well. Nineteen days in and 360s are still in short supply plus the windfall of positive news around Blu-ray's victory spells and easy win for Sony this month.

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft makes any major changes to the 360 at GDC tomorrow. All the Amazon rumors point to something.

Well, the war's over and that's great. I bailed out of this thread a lot time ago. Too much hostility/negativity, but just wanted to say it's been a real trip. Having followed the format war every day for over two years, it's hard to believe it's over. Time to move on and do something productive will all the time saved I guess...

Hold on, are you using the HD-DVD argument? 😀

🙂 nah, just pointing out that PS3 owners are buying as many new games per console sold as 360 owners are, i.e. they aren't just using the console for blu-ray.

The PS3 is outselling the 360 worldwide so over time it could catch up to the 360 in total units and in game sales, something HD-DVD never showed any signs of doing.

Sounds an awful lot like the hope and logic behind HD-DVD fans. And yes HD-DVD at one point was outselling Blu-Ray players and even had pretty good sales on new releases as well. Some of the Harry Potter titles were something like 55:45 Blu Ray.

Anyways time will tell if it catches up. They have a lot of catching up to do right now if that list was correct. I can understand losing but a ~25:2 deficit on 1 million+ titles is an beatdown.
