I read something where I THINK it suggested that Gangnam is a town or a ghetto and that PHY guy is from there. The song is supposed to be about finding a girl that looks good in ordinary clothing that would love him for his mind. And it's supposed to be a comedic video.

My husband said Gangnam is a neighborhood in Seoul and the way he described it reminded me of the Capital from the Hunger Games. Kinda out there clothing mostly and rich.

It's like a LMFAO music video with Sir Mix A Lot's 'Jump On It' music video's dance moves.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Seoul is a mega metropolis boasting 10 million people, 11th largest in the world (US' largest is NYC at 7 mil).

The city is divided by Han Gang (Han River).

seoulmetro.jpg

The city north of Han River/Gang is Gang-Buk (North of River).

The city south of Han River/Gang is Gang-Nam (South of River).

Gang-Nam is a very affluent part of Seoul with ritzy shops, high rise condos, the best of Seoul's nightlife, etc.

When you say 'Gang-Nam style', that's equivalent of saying 'Hollywood style' or 'Bel-Air style', meaning hip/fly/high class.

Oppa means older brother, used by younger girls. It actually doesn't mean blood related, but an affectionate term for any older men by younger girls.

Oppan means 'Oppa is'. The artist Psy is referring to himself as a third person, presumably talking to a younger girl he's trying to impress.

Oppan Gangnam Style = Your man is Hollywood Style

I haven't paid attention to the lyrics, but it sounds to be typical meaningless pop stuff about how he's fly and he loves this girl, let's party, etc.

looks like he's having a shitton of fun mkaing the video :D

The staff are like wtf.

On a side note: Do you guys find the video's chick cute/hot?

I bring this up because I can't fvcking stand her. She's so disgustingly fake, it bothers me. Her dyed hair, dyed brows, heavy makeup, unnaturally plastic fake teeth, crappy derp eyes that's caked with makeup. Zero body, flat as hell everywhere.

I haven't lived there for 18 years, don't tell me new gen idiots find that chick 'hot'.

You mean the Hyuna girl? No, I don't find her that hot. However, I do think some of the other dancers are quite attractive.

The one on the left here is a cutie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bZkp7q19f0&hd=1#t=1m24

This video went viral or something. It is number 3 on youtube's top 100, right behind Justin Beiber and the "Call me Maybe" song.

LOL

That's actually quite an accomplishment, I had this song stuck in my head for a few days. Now it's back, again.

it must be raining pussy on psy.

Is he married? I remember watching Korean talk show and he was practically proposing to his HS sweetheart who was reluctant. That was like 7 years ago though.

HOLY FVCK it's been 10 years his debut???

I miss his older songs where rapped and lyrics were HILARIOUS.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTbZZmNfT0g&feature=related Look at him, he TEARS IT UP.

US needs a comedic rapper. They're too hard up on same thug-life cash bullshiet. It's been old for too long.

Differences in culture. You don't really hear about cash this/hoes and bitches that in Asian music culture much.
