Quake III demo came out in summer of '99 and they still had that thing running long after the full release of the game was out that fall.

Many people, including myself, lurked for 6 months to a year before they joined. I suspect I actually started coming here since lake 2000, but I only have my join date to go by so I don't worry too much.
