Wow. Had to come out to Cali for training. Hit the airport, got raped on a rental car and lst in San Fran. Anyways finally got my ass turned right side up and made it on the 101. Coming around the corner and then BAM there it is.

Ho-lee fuckin shit.

That thing is a beautiful sight the first time you see it.

Never seen it in person, but I've always been a fan of suspension bridges. They're pretty cool.

I've seen the pictures of course but always had kind of a "meh, its a bridge" feeling about it. Yeah, then I actually drove over it. Its pretty fuckin cool, pictures dont do it justice. I hit it with a bit of low cloud cover so the top was somewhat obscured which really added to the effect.

San Francisco and the surrounding area is really quite striking. I had pretty much the same reaction as you when I saw the Golden Gate for the first time. Oddly enough much like you I went out there for a training class as well the only time I have been there. Got off the plane, grabbed my rental car, dropped my junk off in my hotel room and headed immediately for Yosemite.

I walked across it once in the rain and mist. It was pretty cool. An aircraft carrier went under me.

I regularly ride my bike over it. Heading up Conzelman and looking back at the bridge and the city is a pretty spectacular sight.

I have been at Fort Point, underneath the the Bridge on the SF side, and its quite a site. I've driven over it twice, both times when it wasn't foggy. One Day i'll walk across it, but for the moment, I have to wait.

Great to view without the blanket of fog it usually has encompassing it.

Yup- drove through it once during a weekend for my cousin's wedding. Didn't actually see the bridge till I was 1/3 on it. I don't even recall seeing Alcatraz.

I've lived in the north bay most of my life and I never get tired of seeing the bridge as I come around the curves of 101.

I also have a lovely engineering depiction of the bridge with technical notations given to me by Zenmervolt as an apology for the conversation where I enthused, "isn't that a beautiful picture [of the Golden Gate]?" and he rather acerbically replied, "it would be if that damn bridge wasn't in the way."

It's cool as hell from underneath as well, where you can see the supporting structures. I used to fish out of Berkeley and Emeryville marinas...every trip, under the Gate.
I got called for a job on one of the retrofit projects years back, but didn't like the contractor, so I passed.

no, you were being racist.
reported.

What is racist about his post? I fail to follow your thought on his original post. The original post is about a bridge and if I follow his post correctly he is asking if there are apes on the bridge, where is the racism?

All of the other times I've been to San Francisco, I never got close to the bridge, but it is indeed an impressive sight. Hopefully I'll drive down there again soon.

I've ridden a bike across it (while my son slept in a trailer I was hauling) and driven it a handful of times. We rented the bikes at the Wharf, rode along the waterfront and to the base of the GG. Went up some crazy hills, crossed the bridge, went down into Sausalito and then on to the Tiburon Ferry back to the Wharf. It was a beautiful ride, but I'm from Florida and am not used to all those hills so it kicked my butt.
