Why are they so great? These two movies are to be watched over and over again and enjoyed like a fine Francis Ford Coppola wine. You dont just watch them, you savor them. They are the pinnacle of moviemaking: tremendous fleshing out of many chracters, and also a fantastic period piece. Watching them gives you the feeling like you are actually back in the 1900's to 1950's.
Another aspect of these films is the believability of the characters. The actors pull off these parts so convincingly, you forever link them with these movies. People still to this day associate James Caan with Sonny, and probably not much else. The movie was an ensemble at its finest, with many of the secondary characters playing a bigger part than what most do in other films.
Also, the films are beautifully shot, and there is very little background music to disturb the acting. Its like Coppola wanted to film two 3.5 hour plays. The dark settings, the trips to Italy, old time New York. Just fantastic filmmaking.
I think you need to wait a few years and watch them again. And I mean really set aside time to watch and understand them.
Peace
