Why are they so great? These two movies are to be watched over and over again and enjoyed like a fine Francis Ford Coppola wine. You dont just watch them, you savor them. They are the pinnacle of moviemaking: tremendous fleshing out of many chracters, and also a fantastic period piece. Watching them gives you the feeling like you are actually back in the 1900's to 1950's.

Another aspect of these films is the believability of the characters. The actors pull off these parts so convincingly, you forever link them with these movies. People still to this day associate James Caan with Sonny, and probably not much else. The movie was an ensemble at its finest, with many of the secondary characters playing a bigger part than what most do in other films.

Also, the films are beautifully shot, and there is very little background music to disturb the acting. Its like Coppola wanted to film two 3.5 hour plays. The dark settings, the trips to Italy, old time New York. Just fantastic filmmaking.

I think you need to wait a few years and watch them again. And I mean really set aside time to watch and understand them.

Peace

First 2 movies are the greatest movies ever IMO.

Maybe you need to watch them a second time...

I  Godfather series.

I'll think about it next time I can't fall asleep at night. They'd be a guaranteed cure for insomnia.

The Godfather series never did appeal to the under 12 population.

I'm not quite as decrepit as you, but I'm well out of puberty. :p

i wholeheartedl agree

i have the DVD's and watched the first two multiple times. The first two movies fit sooo well together, and the ending of part two is probably one of the best, if not the best, ending in all of cinema (my opinion :) )

Almost anything on my DVD list (sig). Some on my DVD list are crappy (e.g. Gladiator), but they generally belong to my wife.

Godfather 1 & 2 are two of the best movies of all time. Maybe you should stick to movies like From Justin to Kelly, Glitter, and Gigli? ;)

Great stories, great acting, great character development. I don't think that I would have liked it when I was younger and didn't really care about movies, but I truly appreciated it some time when I was in college.

the godfather and godfather ii are classics. they are used in film classes to teach you how to make an awesome movie. they are movies i can watch over and over again and not be bored at all. the acting is superb, and you forget that brando is such a wacko and believe he is the godfather.

I never expect everyone to like the same thing. So I would not be surprised if you like the movies or not. But you need to judge a movie by more than if you liked it or not.

I judge movies by looking at:

1. Acting

2. Cinematography: visual quality, production values, etc

3. Story line: plot, dialogue, characters

4. Did it hold my attention, did the movie achieve it's goals

I give each category a 0 to 1 score and add up the four scores.

The Godfather movie

1. Acting: all the main and support actors did a great job: 1
2. Cinematography: the movie was a joy to watch: 1
3. Story line, great story, dialogue, and characters: this movie has influenced movies that followed it.: 1
4. It held my attention: 1

I gave the Godfather 4 stars out of 4 stars.

I gave the Godfather II 3 and one half stars

Godfather part II is arguably one of the few sequels that is actually better than the original (which was outstanding in its own right).

I think that expectations and who you watch a film with have a great deal of influence on your opinion of a movie. What were you expecting when you watched the films, and were you watching them with other fans?

They do blow. I have tried unsuccessfully to finish them. I believe I got bored in the middle of the second one last time I tried. I seem to recall the patheticness of the scene where some guy is shot and hits a car or something and the special effects were worse than those seen in the star wars kid videos.

But, the movie isn't about special effects, so that's really just a minor gripe. What the movie is about, is boredom. I found it unentertaining to the max. I've seen various mob movies and shows, and this rates among them as the most thoroughly boring. I enjoyed goodfellas, donnie brasco, sopranos, casino, scarface (though it was long), etc. Godfather is unGodly boring.

I last tried to watch it when I was 24. And it's not that I'm a kid. I actually watched citizen kane for the first time last december and found it was worth sitting through, so I can appreciate an older movie :)
