Again, does anyone know how to get the geese to go somewhere else? (besides the grave)
Airports are using a variety of methods, some involving falcons, dogs, and I even saw a thing on a robotic falcon. Obviously, the problem of geese hanging around the tarmac has somewhat more serious consequences than someone stepping in doo-doo, and they manage to find a way of dealing with it without killing them.

The problem with geese is that they over-reproduce, destroying their habitat. Controlled kills and hunting of waterfowl actually save lives.

Key word being, controlled. Out of season, and without a take permit, it's illegal.

Here.

Your poll is absolutely retarded.

It seems to me that this is typical human thinking. "If it's in my way, destroy it." I think if they'd put their thinking caps on, they could have come up with a compromise.

I don't know about the Canadian goose, but the mute swan is a non-indigenous, invasive species...it has no place here in the Chesapeake Bay, they're not endangered, and as such it's a whole lot easier to kill them than to transport them somewhere else...I do hope the meat gets used, though.

Funny you mention that - I just started reading up a bit on mute swans a few weeks ago, when one moved into the lake near my house in Gaithersburg.

Yes, they are supposedly sending the geese to a butcher to be processed and given to the homeless...

Sorry about the poll. It made no sense the way I worded it. Sorry. It is removed.

I don't really have to many details. I assume some local company came and did the dirty work. How they gassed them, I'm not sure.

Put on shoes or walk somewhere else. Do you need someone to do all your thinking for you?

Funny, how it is fine that people have don't mind picking up after their dogs but we don't care about geese crap everywhere.

One is a wild animal, one is a pet. I can find a link for you explaining the difference if you need some background on the concept.

Is there a large population of geese where you live?

The problem is that in urban settings the geese have no predators to keep the numbers down. Simply adding a few large turtles to the ponds where they nest would probably go a long way towards fixing the problem, and it would be a cheap, easy and maintenance-free fix at that. Large turtles love to eat baby geese and goose eggs. Then we wouldn't even have to worry about gassing and whatnot.

I work at a marina in ontario and I spend alot of my time freaking the geese out, scare them out onto the water and some get seperated and swim under the dock, when they swim under I walk onto of the dock and just as they are swimming out the other side I jump and scream at them. They try to fly away but usually hit the bottom of the dock, if the geese were gone I dont know what I would do when work get boring.

How about the geese go somewhere else and take their poop with them. When everywhere is a geese toilet maybe is something wrong.

While one may be a wild animal, we should have to tolerate geese poop everywhere. Maybe some people like it, I don't. Anyone want to play on soccer field full of geese crap?

There are tons of geese. They hold up traffic all over the place and crap everywhere. They are extremely annoying.

So does anyone know how to gather them up or make them leave? What do they eat besides their own poop?

What type of turtle? Can you get them at the local pet store?

Can you lure them away with some sort of food?

How do they hold up traffic? Just run 'em over!

Running them over works in theory.... You piss of the pacifists and other people who love pests. BUT more importantly you get your car dirty and potentially damaged.

In my area the one that usually does the job is the alligator snapper. They're big and mean, and would not be available at a pet shop, but probably from a fish hatchery. Smaller turtles would eat the eggs, but large alligator snappers can even take adult geese:Q In other parts of the country there are probably other species that would be suitable.

So I am for killing them.

People get slightly inconvenienced by some geese so the answer is to just kill them all? Where I live there's a ton of geese that hang around a lake and park that's right downtown. If I'm using the jogging trail I wear shoes and if I want to play frisbee or something I simply go to another park. Yes, they come out on the road sometimes but it's not that big of a deal.

So I am for killing them.

It's a longshot, but an advanced sentient alien species should find Earth.

"Kill them, they're just humans."

See how you like it. Jackass.

There are a couple alternatives to killing them, though that tends to be the most effective and drastic.

Goose-be-gone. It's a spray that you put on grass, the geese won't eat the grass anymore because one of the ingerdients, some kind of natural oil I think, tastes horrible to them. So they won't flock to golf courses and stuff.

Fencing aroud lakes and ponds. Doesn't have to be very high or very visible, just a couple of wires surrounding the water works.

Get rid of open spaces. Not practical in all cases but if it was your backyard you could do some landscaping. They don't like obstacles, like fences.

Floating balls and things in the water. Some company even makes a fake croc head that bobs up and down in the water, I think their photo looks photochopped to me. link

Harrass them. They like to be left alone, harrass them for long enough with loud noises, dogs, laseres, etc and they'll eventually go away.

Non-lethal Canadian Goose control

Why do I know about this? I had to give a presentation for my applied ecology class on pest management and my animal was geese. Did you know that an adult geese craps 2lbs a day?
