woo. Called it!

I'm glad they can still keep it going. Besides, this is what GM always did best: Full size RWD vehicles.

No. The Pontiac was over the top, trying too hard. I think the Holden version is the best. The car is supposed to move units while looking good. It was never supposed to be some catwalk model or design prototype.

IMHO.
Over the top? You can't be serious. All they did was change the grill. The Aussie and US versions are virtually identical. It was a low volume car from the get-go. Otherwise they would have brought over a lower trim model without the big wheels and ground effects kit. Check out the base Commodore. That would surely hit the market with fanfare. Or maybe not.

What GM does with the Chevy version depends on where they position it in their lineup. If they plan to sell Impalas and Caprices side-by-side, rest assured the Caprice is going to look like a SEMA showcar. That is if they want it to actually sell.

I'm not trying to convince you, it's my opinion, but anyway, you said it yourself (see bold).

FWIW, I whole-heartedly agree. IMHO the Pontiac front-end wrecked the smooth classy lines of the vehicle.

I guess this means the end of Police departments being stuck with crappy FWD Impalas or Dodge piles of crap. Here in Frisco/Plano, the departments have dropped those crapmobiles for juiced-up lowered Tahoes. I'd imagine that a proper V8 sedan like this would make more sense to the PDs.

i can imagine a good portion of G8's were destined as rentals, hence the high sales volume.

the new 3-series and mb C-class stole most of the thunder in the entry lux sedan market this year i think.

IDK, the 3-series and C-class are borderline compact sedans, the G8 is a full-size setup. Different markets altogether AFAIC.

hmm don't really like its going to be a chevy, figred it would be a better fit under the buick name plate, but I guess with them bringing back the regal that 3 sedans is enough for buick. 4 might be a bit much.

I just hope there is truth to the rumor that the G8 ST will live on as a GMC vehicle. Why GMC was kept around as a brand is beyond me, but the concept of that vehicle is pretty awesome.

The article compared the sales of G8 with the Acura TL and the Infiniti G37, which are direct competitors with the 3-series and C-class.

I can imagine a comparison of a G8 GT with the rest of the V6 family sedans (Accord, Camry, Taurus, etc) would be somewhat valid.

^^ Yeah, but the G8 is a *big* car. The G6 is more of the size of the TL/G37/3-series/C-Class. The G8 is larger than a 5-series FFS, and moving close to a 7-series in size.

If they didn't price the G8 GXP so much more than the auto, I'm sure it would have sold better.

I still think the G8 looks better, I want one still.

The G8 is an import which limits its production numbers thanx to the UAW. Only about 30,000 were supposed to be imported annually which is far fewer than the production number for the Grand Prix and Bonneville which it replaced. Very few if any went to rentals unlike the Grand Prix.

The GXP comes in an auto as well. Regardless, the GXP is like Dodge's SRT8. It's not supposed to sell in huge numbers.

And make it look like this...

i'm not sure GM wants to put the new malibu in fleet duty, which is the current domain of the impala.

the 7 series is longer and with a much longer wheelbase, but the G8 has a bigger back seat. and way more trunk space. my sister's focus sedan has more trunk space than a 7 series. wtf bmw. G8's roofline is lower so the headroom about 2 inches less up front, but it's got an inch more legroom and a fraction less shoulder room.

I would like to see it as a Cadillac actually. Just bring the Holden version over and slap the Cadillac logos on it. The Caddy logos are pretty similar to the Holden logos, at least as far as being round. Plus, Cadillac has made some noise about wanting to attract some younger buyers.

According to Autoblog...there seems to be a little backpedaling by GM on Lutz statement... which is a shame as I really want to see the G8 live-on under some other guise in the United States.

G8 Denied

"The G8 will not be a Caprice after all. I'd mentioned it, and said we were studying it, giving it a serious look, because a car like the G8 was just too good to waste. "That's all still true. But I have to say that, with my new "marketing" hat on, upon further review and careful study, we simply cannot make a business case for such a program. Not in today's market, in this economy, and with fuel regulations what they are and will be."
