I already have a big screen hdtv at my house, so it makes a lot more sence to add $300 and have the ultimate gaming machine (for a while at least) than spend at least a grand on a new high end PC. And if history has taugh us anything, the consoles will outclass the PC's available at the time of their release, they always do.

I'm not saying a console will replace the PC. Yeah you can't have MS word on a console, but I don't want MS word on a console, I already have a PC to do that. What I want a console is play games at insane resolutions with top quality graphics and high fps, and the PS3 will let me do that.

Enjoy buying all those pricey games for your PS3 and XBox360, kids ... I'm playing ET for FREE two years after it was released. That's called getting your moneys worth, even though I spent more for my PC compared to a console. Besides, upgrading and repairing my PC has led to a job in the IT tech field for me. Think playing that console is gonna get you a JOB ??

PC rules, there's nothing consoles do that PCs can't. Next gen cards will be nearly as fast as consoles (which I think will be limited by the 700mhz GDDR3), and next gen will be much faster and complex, with DX10...

I was wondering. 2x6800 Ultra's cannot be fed fast enough even from the fastest CPU that exists today from AMD for PC's. Why in the world should we think that it could feed a single G70, nevermind two. Thoughts?

You have to think the next generation engines will be the first to really take advantage of multi-threading. When are those due to show up? Unreal 3 engine is what, 12-18 months off still?

This is what everyone has been saying for a while. Multi-core won't benefit gamers until games become multi-threaded, which will take some time. I for one am usually quite supportive of hopping onto the latest video card upgrade because it tends to be quite rewarding from a visual standpoint. This year, however, there simply doesn't seem to be enough cpu power to keep up with the video card except at extremely high resolutions. If the next generation of consoles is released in a timely manner at a reasonable price point, such as $300, it would make sense to skip the PC upgrade this year and get a console instead. It really depends on when the consoles actually become available to the public though...

Seriously though, these consoles are going hasten the speed of Multithread titles for the PC. So even if i dont get an Xbox or PS3 (ill prolly get both) id welcome their release.

The CPU limitations are mostly with older games, and at lower resolution settings. Doom3 at 1080p res with full AA/AF (especially NVIDIA's FSAA+MSAA setting) will be GPU-limited on any single video card. As will SC:CT with soft shadows, FarCry with HDR, etc. Sure, if you want to play Quake3 or Counter-Strike, you'll be CPU-limited no matter what settings you pick. But I'd hardly consider it an issue if you're "CPU-limited" to 100+FPS at maximum res/quality settings.

The games to push next-gen hardware are coming. You'll note that the next-gen hardware is not actually here yet either. I would hope that for a good 6-12 months after the release of a new piece of high-end hardware (especially when it nearly doubles performance over the previous high-end, as NV4X SLI did), that hardware is fast enough to run existing games at max settings without a problem.

And how will the launch of this card diminish the enjoyment I've gotten out of SLI for months now, and will continue to get after this card is launched if I choose not to buy it?

People like you play a foolish game- wait for the next big thing so you can say you have the fastest card. The problem is, something else will always be right around the corner waiting to trump your purchase, it's just a question of how many months.

In any case- I don't regret SLI. My monitor does 16X12 at 85Hz, and there's not a game out there my 6800GTs can't shred at 16X12 4X8X or higher. That won't change because the next gen of cards comes out. 😉

Man who cares about resolution, Gran Turismo looks great on my 15'' standard 15 year old Sony tv. Sure higher resolution looks better but the same parents you are talking about don't care about that because it looks fine on a normal tv aswell.
