You know what really confuses me? I live in Washington state - they are one of the few states with an explicit ban on gay marriage, also one of the most liberal. Now California too? How does this happen?

The Cali Supreme Court cannot overule a constitutional amendment. It would take the citizens of Cali to repeal it or a SCotUS opinion uphold gay marriage to over trun Prop 8.
