GT740 is based on GK107 and GT 730 GDDR5 (and the GT640 GDDR5 that came before it) use the GK208 core which not only has a narrower bus (64 bit vs. 128 bit), but less ROPs compared to GK107.

So when choosing between the two, the GT740 (previously known as the GTX 650) is the one to get. However, I don't remember seeing too many affordable low profile GT 740s. It seems that once a card's TDP exceeds around 40 watts the low profile version commands at least $20 premium over the full size one.

P.S. Lowest price (in this thread) for GT 730 GDDR5 card has been $44.99 AR plus $2.99 shipping....so $48 shipped after receiving the rebate.

This one is $5 more, but doesn't need a rebate. So yeah, it is not the hottest deal. (In fact, at one point we could get low profile GT 640 GDDR5 (which had same GPU) for $39.99 AR free shipping back in 2014.....but that was closeout pricing.)

I looked for this thread.... ah well. I just needed a cheap PCI-E card to test a system. I'm tired of not having an adequate PSU to use one of the other cards I have laying around, so I got a GT 610 to keep handy for testing purposes.

How've people's experiences with MSI rebates been? Any/many serious problems in terms of getting them when all was said and done?

I've never had any problem with them, but I always make sure I provide exactly what is required. They use an outside rebate handling company named 4MyRebate (so do Asus, Gigabyte, sporting good stores, auto parts stores, etc.). Just keep in mind that when they say, "We will make you wait 8-10 weeks to get your rebate if you don't let us keep 10% of it," they really mean it. If you choose "No Wait Rebate" they keep their word and mail it to you a couple of days after they finish processing it.

Usually when I get a prepaid VISA card ($10, $20, $30), I use it up in one shot at a gas station to fill my tank and that's the end of it. It will probably ask for the ZIP code the rebate was mailed to, and as long as you can provide that, the card will be accepted and you can drive off with your gas and be done with it.

Thanks. I can live with jumping through hoops (and taking photos to prove it) and then waiting forever, I'm just not willing to risk a processor with a frequent, er, "habit" of "not receiving" documents included with the original submission, especially when, as here, the rebate is for more than half the original out-of-pocket cost.;)

I hate rebates enough that I wish there was an "instant half rebate" option -- pay $24.95 but get no mail in rebate.

I've done at least three without issue. I spend my cards on groceries at Walmart.

They have always come but they are the slowest of the ones I have sent in lately. My last one was for a motherboard rebate.

Registered it on 5-15-16 and sent it in right away.
They emailed on 6-6-16 that they received it. with this:
"Your submission has been processed and your response has been mailed. You should receive it by September 18, 2016. If by this date you have not received your response, please contact us at 1-800-953-3098. Thank you."
I think I received it slightly earlier (second week in Sept).

That's way too long for something that's stated 6-8 weeks. Looks like it took 17-18 weeks.


I just realized that I sent another MSI motherboard rebate a couple weeks back. I happened to look at the copies I made and they didn't state a time in which I would receive the rebate.
They do come but they are really, really slow.

Yeah, that's totally ridiculous. I'll have to think about it a bit more, but at the moment, even though I could just put auto-reminders on my calendar, having to wait such a long, indeterminate period is sounding like just too much of a PITA for more than half the out-of-pocket cost for something I'd basically be buying to stick on a shelf as a spare part...

I'm personally averse to giving up part of what they owe me to make them do their job, but 4MyRebate does offer a "No Wait" Rebate option if waiting is a problem for you. The turnaround time for online registration, mailing the documents to them, waiting for processing, and receiving the check or prepaid VISA card is around two, maybe three weeks. That might be worth sacrificing 10% of your rebate. (For example, if you're entitled to a $40 rebate, they will let you choose the "No Wait" option for "a small fee" of $4 and you'll get a $36 rebate.)

Edit: Mailing time will vary. For example, I live in the Dallas area and it only takes one day for mail to reach the rebate processing center in El Paso.

Hmm. I just looked and my previous MSI rebate from May and MSI used Status-now.com and that's the one that took 15-17 weeks.

The MSI rebate I just mailed in is for 4myrebate.com, which I know is faster because I did an ASUS rebate online on 7-22.
They received and processed that ASUS rebate on 8-3-16, and said my card would arrive in 5-7 weeks.
It arrived on 9-22, so it was in fact around 7 weeks.

Way better than http://www.status-now.com/

Maybe they switched rebate centers because of complaints that it was taking so long.

I snagged the card. Have a couple meh possible usages for it. I've done a couple MSI rebates in the last year, at least one of them took a long time to show up but it did eventually.

I picked one up too.

10.00 AR is good. Looks like this MSI rebate also goes to 4myrebates.com, which should be faster.
