Justin Frankel sick of AOL

Gnutella author Justin Frankel is considering quitting Nullsoft, the company he founded and sold to America Online, following repeated clashes with his corporate parent over software projects.

Frankel's comments come less than a week after AOL pulled a program he authored called Waste that enables small groups of people to create secure networks for sharing computer files.

Calling coding "a form of self-expression," Frankel said he could no longer put up with AOL's interference. "The company controls the most effective means of self-expression I have," he wrote in a note posted on his personal Web site. "This is unacceptable to me as an individual, therefore I must leave".

2.9 is good and 5 is supposed to rock.

I don't think Frankel played a major role in the development of Winamp 3 either.

I'm surprised he even slept with AOL... i figured he had sold the company and took on another project somewhere else.

It's about time, although he should have told AOL to stick their $75 million (what they supposedly paid Justin Frankel for Winamp) where the sun don't shine, when they came knocking in the first place. Hopefully we'll see some more good stuff from him in the future if he quits AOL for real. Winamp is an awesome program.

Winamp sucks anyways. Crappy looking interface and totally bloated. Windows Media Player looks a lot sweeter and even sounds a whole lot better.

I'm still on 2.8, a pre-bloated version and the latest that hasn't ever given me any problems.

Time to keep that 2.9 installation file in storage. You never know what AOL will turn the next upgrades in to with out any objections from the programmers.

I read that they paid him $75 million in Time magazine back when AOL acquired Winamp. And I'm not saying I think anyone WOULD turn down $75 million for an MP3 player (I wouldn't) but in the end, Winamp and Nullsoft probably would have been better off without AOL, IMHO.

Whatever, you don't know quality when you see it. You probably belong to that Microsoft hate bandwagon. Yeah great, let me enjoy my superior MS products, while you enjoy your buggy and crappy non MS products. Using Winamp really wins you a lot of respect amongst your geek friends right?

Some people prefer Winamp over WMP, me being one of them. Doesn't make him and I Microsoft haters. Pull the stick out of your ass and lighten up a little. Geez. What's next, flaming people for liking Coke more than Pepsi?

Winamp 2.92 will have CD ripping support, with support for OGG. OGG VBR at
0.0 sounds pretty decent, listenable, at like 60kbps. I'm pretty impressed
with it.

Damn! I guess that won't be included in the next release. :(

The last version of WMP that was any good at all was 6.4 and I only use it for vids. Winamp 2.x is my preferred MP3 player.

Actually, I think WinXP is the best consumer OS ever designed, and IE is the best browser on the market.

You wanna try again?

Same here!

Fact is MS still makes some software that blows like WMP 7+ and FrontPage.
