The doctors on the show House are not rich.

They're all hospitalists. No money in that.

Well if a doctor does not work in a hospital then what do they do? private practice?

A hospitalist is a Dr. thats hired by the hospital. They're essenitally staff. Patient money goes to the hospital and not them.

Private practice physicians contract w/ a hospital to use their facilities. All patient profits go to them or their group practice.

Doctors live it up?

Only doctor I "know" spends all his shit, lets the wife (now ex) spoil the children like there's no tomorrow. Two homes, luxury cars and no savings.

Because it's a TV series?!? Seriously you have to connect with the characters for this to work, you have to relate. And showing off how rich and spoiled they are would only get in the way of connecting with the charters.

Additionally, with the exception of House and other senior staff, his "helpers" are all young, and thus probably in debt up to their eyeballs.

I suppose "no money" is a relative term. I know quite a few "hospitalists" making 300k+. They're not starving.

I think hospitalists make less money than MDs in the same field who are part of private practices

The hospital in the show runs a free clinic.

Also not everyone who makes 6 figures lives like a celebrity. They might portray the characters as having fairly basic accommodations, but keep in mind all the stuff they spend their money on. House bought a sport bike basically on a whim. He rents an apartment because he doesn't want to be tied down, he doesn't need the space provided by a house, and he'd rather live in a city than in the suburbs.

Most hospitalists don't really break even until they're in their 40's, if you factor in student loans through med school.

And if I remember, Cameron owned a decent sized house for a single person.

yes.

My dad worked for a private practice (maybe 15 MD's at his office? - Internist), and somewhat recently became a hospitalist....he's making nearly double what he made before- works 2 weeks on, gets 2 weeks off. Not to mention the crazy retention bonuses he's gotten. He loves every thing about it- never is on call/have to go in on his days off etc. And this is in a fairly small city.

"Private practice" is very vague. Specialists in a nice group practice most frequently make more than their counterpart employed by a hospital. i.e. a cardiologist who's a member of a group practice vs a staff cardiologist at a hospital. Internists, though, don't have as large a discrepancy. It really all depends on where you land yourself .. if there are profitable group practices around, etc. Also, benefits/intangibles can be quite a bit different as well. Retirement plans, call hours, bonuses, etc. etc. can vary greatly. Really it comes down to a personal decision, but to say that there's no money in being employed by a hospital is absolutely absurd.

I know many who make upwards of 300K/year and none live flashy...all pretty basic ppl who shop deals like everyone else.
