IMO, they're better.

"Better" is subjective.

If "Better" means neater / slicker visual effects, then the newer ones would be "better" because the visual effects technology is far superior to what was available in the 50s / 60s / 70s. The old one was B&W too.

The original was a "message" movie too, about not to go wild with nuclear weapons, and to live in peace. The new one (I haven't seen it) is also apparently a message movie too, but the messages are all junk science, politically correct, crap in a rapidly moving script to help the ADHD-ridden yoots of 'merica not notice that it's all crap ("ohhhhhh shiney" .....)

I'll probably see it this weekend, I'm not expecting much though.

Oh, Them! kicked ass. It was so damn funny, and my mom was talking about how it scared her as a kid.

Can't imagine you would gain anything in the visuals by going blu-ray.

Why do you say that?

The movie had few special effects and they were of poor quality. Unlike the remake the orginal was a story movie and not a special effects movie.
A regular dvd would be more than capable of showing it in its best quality.

How was it bad? Pretty much in every conceivable way. Bad acting, shitty storyline, horrible continuity throughout (and parts that just made no sense whatsoever at all). I can't believe I paid for that.

The original is much better. When the credits rolled at the end of the new one, I was wondering if they had forgotten to splice a reel of film in.

I concur wholeheartedly. Bad, bad and more BAD. I saw the remake and feel violated just for wasting the time to watch it. It would have been much worse if I had actually paid to see it. Paying to watch one of these horrible remakes is like having to pay someone to rape you.

The only people who seem to like the remakes are the ones who don't seem to know better ... the very young. The world existed before they were born and got along very well without them. Planet of the Apes, War of the worlds and this movie will become classic representations of how moviemakers put too much emphasis on special effects ... and bad ones at that.

Michael Rennie might very well be turning over in his grave right now ...

Most remakes suck. This had no chance of topping the original. The only problem with the original is it does not age well.

I just recently watched the original for the first time. Instantly has made it into my top 10 movies. I love movies from that age because they worked hard to make a good film with a good story. Now everyone makes a movie for about 10k and spends 50 mil on special effects. Fn weak.

You sir hit the nail on the proverbial head. Special effects per se did not exist back in the 50s. Computers were in their infancy and were incapable of anything but the most basic tasks. The lack of quality special effects meant that a movie would be considered "good" based upon other, more important factors such as acting and story.

Now, with advanced computational systems available to produce elaborate special effects ... directors/producers seem to have forgotten what it takes to make a "good" movie. Unfortunately, the "hacks" that supposedly "act" in these remakes will make more money "acting" in just one movie then did a quality actor did during their entire career during the early days of motion pictures.

I am holding out some hope for the remake of Forbidden Planet since its being done by J. Michael Stracinski (sp?) who did Bablyon 5 and is a huge fan of the original. In fact, in B5, the machine planet scene was intentionally meant as an omage to the machine in Forbidden Planet.

Here's a theory for you.... CGI killed Hollywood. Sure it has its place here and there (Matrix bullet time etc) but in many and MOST cases scenes and whole movies are just made to show of the power of some server farm. CGI RARELY makes a movie better, it often just distracts and looks "kinda good" but still sticks out like a sore thumb.

I disagree. Film resolution still outstrips BRD by a big margin. So if they have a good print (and this movie was huge so they have good archival copy) they can rescan it for the BRD and it would be glorious.

Wow, it's true, I didn't even know, lets hope they can pay some attention to casting and scriptwriting to go along with the SE's..

I've been waiting, got a "47 LCD so I'm all set there, now thinking about pc-based unit or stand-alone player, DRM issues still seem to be a problem with some Blu-ray drives. I agree FMJ is a killer movie, I'm hoping my favorite war film "The enemy below" will get to Blu-ray one day..
