Just as a classic? Or could someone born within the last twenty something years appreciate it?

the new remake is easily the worst movie I have seen in the last 5 years. It was a lot of save the environment propaganda and Microsoft vista ads. The 1955 version is great, a classic that hopefully wont be smeared by the craptacular crapfest this new remake was. After I watched the remake, I thought I died a little inside.

The original is an excellent movie, just a little dated by now. It is a slower paced movie as well (assuming modern trends still hold true with the remake that I haven't seen and probably never will), so those with short attention spans beware.

I suppose given the time the movie was good. I must be too young to truly appreciate it.

michael rennie was awesome.

Them! still the best of the old 50's scifi, and the original atomic monster film.

Movies ruined by remake:

1. Time Machine
2. Day the Earth Stood Still
3. Planet of the Apes

Agreed, and coming soon (I can just feel it) will be the ruining of "Forbidden planet".....

I liked it. Not sure if I've ever seen the Original, probably should check it out for comparison.

Can't imagine you would gain anything in the visuals by going blu-ray.

Add 'War of the Worlds' to that list.

How was this new one so bad? It looks like an alien movie, but people say it's not...21% on rottentomatoes tells a sombre tale, though.

FYI Netflix has the original available for streaming if you'd like an easy way to check it out. I watched it recently and thought it was decent, but don't expect any action, and of course the special effects from that time are lame. I thought the psychology of the film fit well into the post-9/11 age.

I watched that movie dozens of times when I was a kid, Spielberg cast Tom cruise in the remake and ruins it.

The only good part in the remake was when the ferry was attacked.

I didn't get/like the whole twist of the Aliens coming out of the ground, completely foreign to HG Wells's book..

Is everyone wearing nostalgia goggles, or are the originals that much better?
