The cultural division line between Gen X and Gen Y is pokemon

Yeah... I remember waking up early so I could get that extra 30 minutes to watch that episode of Pokemon at 7AM before going to school (was 5th and 6th grade for me), and talking about the episode with my friends on the way to it.

Based on my experience with my younger brothers, this is very true.

Add to your list: Power Rangers and Spongebob.

i only have the vaguest, most tangential knowledge of pokemon as i was too old for it. apparently it's still huge. if pokemon is (or was) huge in your life, you're probably a millennial (or younger).

also, i was a senior in high school before today's 18 year olds were born.

<--- starting to feel old.

There are high school students with parents younger than me...

That makes me feel old.

I didn't realize Gen X went into the 1980s. I would think the dividing line would be closer to TMNT.

It depends on who's dates you go after.

Some say GenX ended in 1981, some say 1982, and some say 1984.

The general consensus is GenX was 1965 to 1981. 1982 to 2000 is millennials. I share as much in common with todays high school freshman(class of 2018 was born in 1999/2000) as I do people born in the 60s and 70s. Thats umm pretty much nothing.

What are they calling the generation starting in 2001?

Ya, I saw Pokémon. It was on TV after school. There was also Dragon Ball Z. Sailor Moon was in the morning around 7:30am or 8:30am.

I played Pokemon with a Gameboy Color emulator back when it came out. That was in 8th or 9th grade I think. Born in 85. Only played it for a little while. Was way more interested in the Mega Man and Final Fantasy games at the time.

Millennials. It's really irritating to be lumped in with snotty 8th graders when I'm in my mid twenties, but that's how most everyone is calling the generational lines.

No. Millennials are those born between 1982 and 2000. Gen Y = Millennials.

I guess they still haven't chosen a name, but those born 2001 to present are being called Generation Z.

Being born in 83 I'm supposedly a Gen Y but at the time only little kids and the really nerdy kids touched Pokemon.

Yeah, born and 83 and this is the same for me. A couple grades younger got into Pokémon so it was thought to be a kids thing. Some of the Asian kids my age were into it though as well as the fake Asian kids.

Yes. And No. Per Wiki:
There are no precise dates when the generation starts and ends. Researchers and commentators use birth years ranging from the early 1980s to the early 2000s.
Meaning that 10-14 y/o kids are getting lumped in with people in their early thirties (i.e. people born from 80 to 04). Even going by 82-00 results in 32 y/os being lumped in with 14 y/os (aka snotty 8th graders). :colbert:

The demographic term "millennials" will have a lot more meaning once the last of its group reaches adulthood. Counting young to middle age adults together with highschoolers is retarded.

Shit, I used to wake up early to watch Woody Woodpecker. I didn't even want to go to school!

I'm more of a G.I. Joe with kung-fu grip kind of guy.

now my son, born in 86, was into pogs and pokimon.

It's true! I read how somebody did a survey a couple games back (maybe Pokemon Black/White?) just by setting up shop outside a Gamestop on launch day. The average buyer's age was 27.

FWIW.

When you're a little kid all you want is to be the bad ass heavy metal rebel doing things you aren't supposed to do but when you're an adult, you appreciate the simpler things. 😱

Thats how generations work. You know they span about ~20 YEARS. It is not different than a GenXer born in 1980 having nothing in common with GenXer born in the mid/late 60s. It is why the baby boomers born in the early part of the baby boom generation have been retiring for several years while the end of the baby boom still has another ~15 years.

Supposedly I'm a GenXer but I never felt I matched the demographic, too old for most things GenXers supposedly care about but definitely not a boomer. But GenXers are all supposed to be alienated and disaffected so I guess it works out. 😛

I know these people. I had a circle of friends who weren't really mine, but they were tangential to my own circle of friends and the two circles were separated by a few years of age and the younger group had an odd, generally smart ass, geek mentality with no sense of real life taking place.

They did and played:

RPG games on PC
dungeons and dragons
Loved Pokémon and Anime
Lived in fantasy land

My group did and played:

First person shooters and RTS games on PC
Partied, drank booze, got laid
Had an actual 40 hour/wk job
physically active, biking and weights etc
