This is the thing: a 223 is not a sniper round. As a matter of a fact, a body shot at 100 yards isnt a "sniper" shot. "Sniper rifles" as your average congressman understands it are black colored rifles with a scope. A body shot at 100 yards is what you try to do when hunting a game animal when you dont have much time to set up your shot.
What are they going to do, decree all firearms sold in the USA must have an MOA over 5?
Rep. John Conyers of Michigan, the top Democrat on the U.S. House of Representatives Judiciary Committee (news - web sites), and three fellow House Democrats wrote in a letter to the FTC that sniper weapons are different from standard hunting rifles because they are designed to strike a target from a distance.

Exactly. Hunting rifles are far more powerful and have a far better range. Hell, even 60 year old Garands are better."Sniper rifles" as your average congressman understands it are black colored rifles with a scope

No offense but liberal is the opposite of prohibiting guns - your gun laws are extremely liberal. Thought u might want to know.

ah, but there's the rub - is the right of your 15 year old brother to shoot squirrels in the head more important than the right of a dozen people not to be arbitrarily shot? would your brother give up his right to purchase his gun if that meant the sniper wouldn't have been able to purchase his own rifle?

my question was more in the hypothetical sense. granted, the sniper might still have tried to find a rifle if guns were illegal, but he would probably have a harder time. i simply have a hard time seeing the reasonable use of guns outweighing the incredible potential for abuse. target shooting and deer hunting are less important to me than trying to actively prevent murders.

I wish all guns are banned EVENTUALLY (except for hunting possibly). Theres no need for handguns or anything of that sort, if the law was actually enforced. At the moment being though, theres absolutely no point in these dumb@ss "strict" gun control laws because they only prevent regular people from protecting themselves, and does little to prevent true murderers, gangs, and theives from getting guns. Most of asia, thers crime and stuff.. but you don't have to worry about getting shot ever at least... gun control is actually enforced.
It works a little different than that actually. Machine guns (for the sake of brevity) do not require any special license. They are on what's called a Form 4. You find what you want to buy, and fill out the form and send it to the ATF. After a few months you are approved (baring any reason you should be denied, such as a felony conviction). The gun is then transfered to a Class 3 dealer in your state where you pick it up and pay the $200 tax. Same goes for supressors.Originally posted by: ffmcobalt

Automatic weapons are not illegal. You need a federal license to own one. That means fingerprints on FBI files. That means sh|tloads of money each year to have one. But you also need a house or storage unit to keep the automatic weapons in that is deemed safe to the community by the feds.
I know a man who owns his own security company and has a Browning Automatic Rifle.
