The crap that was cut from HL2.

Yeah, this has been known about for a long time. Some stuff doesn't work out when it comes down to the crunch, either for technical or gameplay reasons.

MAYBE.
But it doesnt change the fact that most games nowadays are made with a Hollywood mentality. Get it done and ship it out.

Profit is a LOT more important than content, and its the executives and accountants that direct games, not programmers or artists.
All games start with a mountain of ideas and get chipped down to a nice, manageable mole-hill for easy package and sale. The problem is it seems to me they are still charging us as if we got mountains.

Just like KOTOR II....

DAMN YOU OBSIDIAN ENTERTAINMENT!

Blame Lucas Arts, they are the ones that forced Obsidian to ship it before it was done.

Obsidian was at least nice enough to release a good deal of the content they were working on (but it is not implemented, again due to Lucas Arts forcing them to ship it) hence the reason they have the KOTOR restoration Project

LucasArts was criticized for forcing the developer Obsidian Entertainment to release the sequel too early, resulting in a significant amount of unfinished content being cut from the game and what many consider to be a disappointing and convoluted storyline with an incomplete ending.

Not to condone posting the code to the internet (which is sh*tty and illegal), but that wasn't the reason for the HL2 delay. (In fact, IIRC, the guy who posted the code claimed he did it to prove that Valve was nowhere near as close to being done as they were claiming). After HL2 was released, Gabe Newell either wrote an article or gave an interview talking about the HL2 release process, the hacker, and the release date criticism. In it, he regrets not being realistic to the fans about the release date even after it became plainly apparent there was no way they could make it.

As someone who writes software, not everything you originally plan necessarily makes it into the final product due to time or budget or other constraints.

Which is why we get piss poor games more often. Company's need to understand that pushing a game with horrible gameplay, graphics and stupid story but it from a major comic/actor/movie/etc won't make it a hit. It's really sad.

The problem is, due to hype/marketing, many of those cruddy titles do make the publishers money, while many quality games do not recoup development costs.

This so does not surprise me at all. I'm sure this happens to most, if not all games, though we probably just do not here about them all.

Wasn't there a tonne of stuff cut from Vista as well?

KT

I haven't read this stuff before. Some pretty cools things in there.

I don't blame anyone for this content getting cut though. Stuff just has to go if you want to publish in time.

It's funny how you can't please everyone. On one hand if a release gets delayed tons of people are screaming bloody murder. On the other hand if a release is rushed and ends up being terrible, you get the same reaction. Where is the happy medium?

No medium. Release it late.
Simple.

Crappy games that come out early are still crappy games. People will piss and moan about a late game, thats true, but they havent lost anything. No money, no time, no hair follicles.
But to release a bad game at all defeats the purpose of video games entirely: Entertainment.
And then customers are losing money, time and hair.
