The confusion over whole grain and wheat bread

Checking the fine print in ingredient labels is the only way to tell for sure if you're getting whole grains, because many terms are confusing. The first ingredient on the list should use the word "whole," as in "whole wheat flour." (An exception seems to be oatmeal, which is whole grain but doesn't always say so on the label.) Most 100 percent whole grain breads will say so on the package.

WHOLE GRAIN
On the packaging, these terms mean the foods are partly or entirely whole grain:

-- Whole grain

-- Whole wheat (or rye, corn or oats)

-- Stoneground whole wheat (or other grain)

-- 100% whole grain or whole wheat


NOT WHOLE GRAIN
These commonly used terms are not whole grain:

-- Unbleached flour

-- Wheat flour (or other grain)

-- Enriched flour

-- Semolina

-- 100% pure durum semolina

-- Organic unbleached flour

-- Multigrain (although this could be whole grain; read the ingredients label)

-- Degerminated (on corn meal)

-- Stoned wheat

Sorry to bunk what you said. But I have a bread, and it says: Enriched Whole Wheat Flour in the ingredient list.

Enriched Flour can be whole grain.

I just can't get enough potato bread myself. :)

PB&J on some nice potato rolls. :D

How can they label a lot of things the way they do? If it needs to be enriched, it's not whole grain.

I prefer my pbj's on white, personally. To me, the potato gives it a weird taste. They're good for everything else though, even if I buy wheat now to be healthier.

Since we are on the subject of bread, Amused, what are some good breads that do not contain or are low in "HFCS" ?

Or is HFCS just a BS myth?

I've had no personal difference in body fat or weight gain between a completely non-HFCS diet and one that included HFCS in my breads.

Personally, I think it may be a problem for people who drink a LOT of soda and get loaded up on it all day, but not much of a problem with the small amount in the 4-6 slices of bread a person may eat each day.

I purposefully went to the store this week to buy white bread and beef bologna. I left with cracked wheat, but the sandwiches were so good.

I'm disturbed that you're shocked. Do I get a cookie?

My mom educated me on foods and made me shop for the family in High School. I always thought it was a pain in the ass, but I can assure you I'll follow the same pattern with me kids. They will know how to cook and intelligently decipher labels before college.

What is your opinion on low carb breads. Breads were alot of the starch and sugar have been replaced by fiber.

It can be enriched and whole grain at the same time. Enriched just means they add vitamins to it. So you can spray some whole wheat bread with vitamins, and then brag about how many vitamins it has in it.
