I know most of you are using Athlon 64 or Pentium 4C boxes for your gaming, but my flagship gaming system for the past 4 1/2 years has been a 440BX box, and today I hope to extend its life a bit more :)

I bought a VisionTek 64MB Radeon 9100 recently to replace a Radeon DDR. Here are my current specs: Pentium 3 750 MHz, 512 MB PC100 SDRAM, 40 GB WD SE drive (8MB Cache, 7200RPM), Radeon 9100.

Went from 2500 3D2K1 marks to 4400 3D2K1 marks at XGA resolution :D and damn does it feel good to have pixel shadders at last (nature scene finally veiwable!).

Anyone else using a somewhat obsolete machine for games?

I still have a BP6 board, but it's not in use right now.

Right now I'm using a VP6 board (VIA Apollo chipset) with 2x1000MHz PIIIs. Plenty fast enough for me.

It's coming time for me to upgrade, the great thing is that I didn't seem to miss very much over the past 2-3 years I was able to play all the games that I wanted. I know I am not going to be able to play HL2 or Doom3, so I will need to upgrade for those games and future games designed from their engines

Abit BH6 + C533@800, no problems for years. Still gets used daily at home by my parents. Not much of a gaming box, but it sure is smooth running.

A 9100 is pretty good - much better than a 9000 or 9200. It's got 4x2 pixel pipeline architecture (9200/9000 are 4x1) and a full 128-bit memory interface (9200SE POS has 64-bit memory).

Runs a bit slower (250 Core/250 Memory (500 DDR)) than a regular Radeon 8500 (275) but has all the rest of the goodies since it is basically a rebadged Radeon 8500LE.

My old 440BX board blew a long time ago. The only board that ever smoked on me (literally). Soyo 6BA-IV+

Shame too, because I had a 533A Celeron clocked to 896 on it @ 1.8v with a Slotket.

I still have a BX system from '99 back home. I have a PII 350 & 224mb of RAM in there right now. At one point I had a 1.4ghz Tualatin Celeron, 512mb RAM, and a GF4 ti4400 in there. :Q

Ok I just finished running 3DMark03 (XGA 32-bit color) and it was UGLY let me tell you! :D Wings of Fury predictably ran fairly well at 37FPS, but the rest of the tests looked like a slide show. A bad slide show.

Battle of Proxycon: 3.6 FPS
Troll's Lair: 4.2 FPS

Game 4 wouldn't even run.

Total Score: 595 :( :p

I'm currently running an AOpen AX6BC, and my oldest son is using an Asus P3B-F. My mom is using an Abit BX6. Only issue we've had, is the keyboard port on the P3B-F. I foresee these boards continuing on quite a while longer. Stable as a rock!

Buy a 1.4 GHz Tualatin and a slot adapter for the 440BX and extend it even further. :)

That's what I did.

It's running as a file server right now And has 512mb of RAM in it (the max :()

I have a Asus P3B-F machine that I use with a Dazzle DVC II as a capture machine. The thing is rock solid.

My Linux Box is a BX based system. Recently got a very overclockable Celeron 333A. Only need a heatsink and the PII-350 that's in there now will be replaced.

I have a K6-III+ 450@550 system with a Voodoo Banshee for some old fashioned glide gaming.

My mom's still using the BX system I built her back in early '99. Celly 300A @ 375, Asus P2B mobo, 128MB, 10GB 7200RPM, STB Riva TNT 16MB. Was the first computer I ever built. :)

My wife's PC is an ABIT BX Board (I think BE6 or something). I have celeron 566 @ 850MHz in there. Tempted to try a Tualtin converter, but, probably better off buying new stuff. Still using a VooDoo3 16MB but she's not a gamer.

It's been running 24x7 for a long time now. Which reminds me I have to backup some of her data, been a while.

Argh.
