I mean, the whole reason why Cameron decided to hold a referendum is because the Tories were so divided on the issue, and were bleeding votes on the right to UKIP. So they hold a referendum, which Cameron clearly thought was a wizard-wheeze because he assumed remain would win and that would resolve the whole ongoing Tory psychodrama (plus merely offering a referendum as an election commitment would put them one-up on Labour)...and then it all went horribly wrong because they lost it.

And now they find themselves _still_ being outflanked on the right by the "Reform Party" that is the successor to "The Brexit Party" that was the successor to UKIP. So they haven't even improved their situation politically at all, for all the chaos and economic damage they've caused.

It does appear that generation is a crucial issue. The other part of it (maybe the same part?) seems to be ethno-nationalism. Nobody can win an election, anywhere, it seems, unless they pander to the nationalist sentiments of the electorate. You can't win an election by telling the truth about your own country - that seems to be as true for the US as the UK as for Russia. And probably for Israel and (insofar as they qualify as a country) the Palestinians.
Part of it is the bogus distinction between 'nationalism' and 'patriotism'. The latter is just the former with a tax-base.

Well of course they do - did you think the boomers were actually going to admit that they took advantage of public programs to get them an education and such, only to pull the ladder up behind themselves?

Or admit that they want to cut social security, but only for their kids and not themselves?

Or say, ignore climate change when it could have been handled at far lower cost?

Or say, take advantage of plentiful housing that was built with very few restrictions before their time, only to then ban new housing construction around them, impoverishing their kids’ generation?

These two really piss me off! I''m part of the generation that had "free" university education in the UK and it blows my mind that people cant see how expensive a university education is now and that it doesn't need to be that way, and its massively in the interest of the country to have a highly educated population!




And the housing thing is beyond ridiculous. I know people who are working as ward sisters that are in rented accommodation because there's no way they can afford a mortgage plus deposit! How is that good for them, the country or the economy?

It's good for rich conservatives, and they're the only ones who matter.

It'll cause a problem somewhere along the way, but that will probably be someone else's job to deal with. Plus if it happens during the watch of a non-tory government, then conservatives can blame that government for it.

I paid off my morgage about a decade ago but I also have kids and I want them to have a functional housing market and I want the country in general to have a functional housing market. TBH the value of my house doesnt really affect my life, its there and I have the security of a roof over my head without the whims of landlords to worry about. I'd like that for everyone to have that even if it means the value of my house goes down.

The housing thing is a joke. Plentiful housing is easily achievable, just not in popular places, and it will never be cheap, so just get over that one.

It’s not sour grapes for me, we have no debt and have very healthy investment accounts.

As for housing never being cheap this is just you pretending history doesn’t exist as housing was vastly more affordable in the past if you bother to check. The boomers fucked their kids over and you’re just trying to find excuses for the most selfish generation in history.

You guys were greedy - just own it.

Yeah, everyone should just move away from their friends, family, job to the middle of nowhere to get that sweet cheap housing instead of letting the market provide more housing for people where their friends, family, and job opportunities are.

You could buy a one bedroom in Manhattan for $50k in the 80s. Accounting for inflation that should be about $150k today. Instead it’s over $1 million.

But housing was never cheap. lol.

Boomers are the worst generation in modern history.

Personally, my gripes with the Boomers have nothing to do with my parents, who were older than the Boomers - my family wisely chose to skip the Boomer generation entirely!

(And, to be honest, I resisted the idea of generational politics for a long time, because I thought it was a red-herring when it was really about class. I still think it's primarily about that. But all those Northern pensioners deciding to vote for Johnson was the last-straw)

Unloaded question. Do you think that it's healthy for society if everyone has to move away from their birthplace because they can't afford a house there? And those places that are cheaper, will there be jobs there?
No one's expecting cheap, they are complaining about utterly unachievable.
Honestly society has ripped any realistic aspirations away from a vast majority of young people and we wonder why they are just enjoying the smaller, more affordable aspirations.

They do, they often outright brag about being greedy until you know they actually get blamed for being greedy then its everyone else are entitle brats that never earned anything.

Hell that particular poster tried bragging about committing tax fraud on here, well at least until we started calling it exactly what it is and he became worried that he might get reported for such behavior then suddenly no he was just making stuff up and totally didn't do what he was gloating about having done for years.

These people really are scum and they have the audacity to then proselytize to anyone else about morals, taking responsibility, or pulling oneself up by boot straps?

I think he also didn't think it through as that means they'll move into his neighborhood and then he'll be griping about the influx of people ruining his utopia. I can only imagine what would happen if a black family moved in, he just might have to don a white hood and burn a cross on their lawn, see what Democrats forced him to have to do? Like the song said, try that in a small town.

This is true, they talk about how wealthy they have become off their houses and then criticize their kids for not being able to afford houses without acknowledging any connection between the two.

They will never admit it though because that requires the boomers to admit they fucked up and as the most selfish generation in history they can’t do that.

Leaving aside the issue of moving from where one grew up (and feels that one belongs). Is anything really gained for society if people have to move to places where there are no jobs, and then become unemployed, because they can't afford to live anywhere near where their employment is?

The flambe you just got above is why people don't take your generation seriously anymore. You're very out of touch and don't realize it. Relative to now, you've lived a life of extreme luxury and opportunity and don't even realize it. Most of us born after 1980 have, and will, live paycheck to paycheck our entire lives. You'll likely die never realizing the wealth of life you lived.
