The Tories can no confidence her which would kick off another tory leadership contest, and they REALLY don't want to go through that again!
The house can no confidence the government and we get a general election but there's no way the tories will go for that given their position in the polls.

It comes down to whether the tories (having the majority of votes) want to get this out of the way now or hope it gets better before they have to call an election.
Normally I'd say that threres no way it can get worse for them but...
Where the F is Labor. Do they no longer participate in your government?

Yeah but she can't be NC'd for a year after being appointed. The Conservatives can, apparently, change that rule and _then_ pull the trigger, but it's quite a palaver to do that and the concensus among Tory MPs - who can't agree on a replacement anyway - seems to be that it would be absurd to have another PM without involving the electorate - but they also really really don't want to face a general election. Hence it seems unlikely they'll be able to get their act together to do what's required.
So everyone is stuck with The PM Nobody Likes (even Larry the Downing Street cat doesn't seem to want anything to do with her).

There's also the little matter of photo ID for voting. Unlike the struggles the Republicans have had trying to introduce that particular voter-supression method, the Tories have already passed the law enabling it. With very little publicity, as it happens. Officially you now need photo ID to vote. Which will of course disproportionately affect Labour voters, who are less likely to have either passports or driving licences.

However they haven't yet passed the secondary legislation that would detail exactly how this system is supposed to work, or which would instruct local authorities to issue special 'voter ID cards'. Not at all clear what would happen if there were an election tomorrow - does the law apply yet or not?

Goddam will she hurry up and quit. So tired of the way Truss seems to be approaching the end asymptotically. Constantly getting closer to being deposed but never quite getting there.

While it certainly looks like Labor is set for a blowout unfortunately for them conservatives in the UK have already fucked the country in ways that will likely be impossible to fix.

Brexit had large costs to the UK economy, mainly in increased tariffs and decreased foreign investment. That's going to make your country permanently poorer, or at least poorer for a good while. The UK can't rejoin the EU, at least not on the terms it had, and so there's only so much to be fixed. The UK voted to make their country poorer and now have to come to grips with the fact that Brexit was always a stupid idea.

You know I used to think BREXIT was the most insane stupidest thing the UK could have done but here we are.

I honestly wonder what public reaction would be if Labor moved to rejoin the bloc, if there are enough people in the electorate to admit they badly fucked up and to do what needs to be done. Even if the terms are less favorable it's the only available way to actually stop the bleeding.

From the Electoral Calculus site, what those ratings would lead to if there were an immediate election and voters stuck with what they told pollsters (might have changed since, if there have been fresh polls). Note the SNP would be the official opposition, which would have implications for all sorts of parliamentary procedures.

I have covid at the mo but that chart has got me chuckling like a loon! I can just see parliament with Sturgeon sitting opposite Starmer and whichever muppet has been lumbered with the tory leadership sitting off in the corner somewhere!

I came to terms with what we lost with Brexit awhile back. I'm just hoping that a Labour super majority would let them fix the NHS, nationalise a bunch of essential services, and try to reduce the poverty gap in the country. Maybe sort out a bunch of council house building.

The main issue I see is that it looks like the voters are going to put Labor in power in a big way but then they are going to expect them to fix the country’s problems and I think those problems are pretty intractable. So, voters will look at a couple years of Labor governance, see things still aren’t better, and then toss them out.

I am not sure the UK has fully come to grips with how badly they fucked themselves.

Hope it's only a mild case. I still don't know if what I had in the summer was one of the milder Omicron-variants of COVID or just some bad cold that was going round due to everyone having failed to get immunity - came down with it days after finally venturing back to the dentist after living with a broken tooth for nearly 2 years, too nervous about COVID to risk doing anything about it. Very relieved that it turned out not to have gotten infected or anything.

Sadly, I doubt the opinion poll results will be reproduced exactly in a real election.

It's probably 2 years until the GE and I think that the Tories are ideologically fixed on making the less well off suffer the most through the mess that we are in.
Hopefully Labour will be brave enough to do some things that can't easily be undone quickly when they get in power. And if they can shit the burden onto the well off I can see them getting a couple of terms.
I won't put it totally beyond Labour's ability to massively burn that majority through infighting before the GE though.

I'm not enjoying it but I'm not laid up. Thanks for the well wishes!

Yeah. I can see them getting a good majority but the Tories as the third party might have to remain a fever dream!
