Those 2 pics define what bokeh is about.
That looks more like Photoshop and radial blur, actually.

If that's decent bokeh, i don't want no decent bokeh.

IMHO that background looks like poop

Really distracts from the girl, doesn't blur the background enough...imho

thats what i thought, looked like fog
i ignored it though, figuring that it was distracting because I knew to look at the bokeh

I agree, you can see it more in the second photo. Look at the ground behind her.

I wonder what converter he's using to mount the Zeiss on his 5D.

more likely a contax with an electronics swap

edit: not after looking at the exif it isn't.

edit2: i think it's funny that the new ZF lenses work better on canon bodies than on cheap nikon bodies.

I like how the bokeh has a slight fisheye distortion at wide open.
My Pentax 50/1.4 does that too.

In fact, you'll see more distortion on 5D+any lens due to 5D being a FF camera.

This answers the how to adapt the Zeiss to the Canon.

DPR

I'm still grieving over the loss of my 5D along with the following lenses: 24-105mm L IS f/4; 70-300mm DO IS; and EF 50mm f/1.4 in LAX on July 12th.

I will replace it all, but it still hurts. :(

Did you have insurance on it?

It was the result of confusion, pressure, stress, etc. processing through security screening at LAX in Terminal 4. Lots of construction. I was travelling to Europe with my wife and her sister on Lufthansa. We checked in, and then had to take our bags elsewhere, then return and go through security screening. Things were a little chaotic as the whole area was under construction.

I had the camera bag, my laptop bag, and two items around my neck - a hat, jacket, etc. All these had to go in bins, and I had to remove the laptop from its case, take off my shoes, remove my belt, my watch, my jacket and everything around my neck. It all went through in two bins plus the camera and laptop bags.

I went through clean, and then began to reassemble everything. In the process I simply forgot the camera bag and left it on a table. I did not realize I didn't have the camera bag until we were called to board the plane. I informed the Lufthansa gate person, and they called TSA. But -the bag was not to be found. Anyone could have walked off with it.

Insurance? I guess it is covered under my personal items floater. I'll see about that. It sure was an upsetting experience.

When we got to Frankfurt, I bought a Canon S3 IS (12X Zoom) in order to have picures of our 3 week Med odyssey. It did the job - came home with over 1200 pictures.

I will replace the 5D probably in September. In the meantime, the little S3 fills the gap.

wow, that sucks! how do you like the S3?

That was a shot from the hip. I was starting a major photographic op and needed a camer quick. In the Frankfurt Airport, I passed a duty free camera shop and popped in. They had a lot of small P&S units, and the S3. When I saw the 12X zoom lens with IS and a 2 GB SD card, I made a quick decision and whipped out my plastic.

It took me a couple of days to get used to the ersatz SLR "optical" viewfinder. It really isn't optical, but is another small LCD with all the necessary data. The larger LCD swivels, but I rarely ever use that since my world has been a true SLR.

Battery life was good - 4 AA cells, and they are available anywhere - even in places like Mykonos and Santorini. :) I got about 350 shots w/o flash or using the big LCD per set of batteries. I carried a spare 4-pack in my pocket.

Picture quality was surisingly good. Not in the 5D league, but certainly as good as my first DLSR, the EOS 60D. It handled RAW as well as JPG. Off loading was easy - no software installation of any kind needed. It came with two CDs, and they are still unopened. I just plugged it in to my T60's USB port, and that turned the camera on, and it was seen exactly as what it was in Vista.

All in all, I give the little S3 high marks. It is certainly more portable than a 5D with flash and extra lenses.

The only downside was that I paid VAT on it, and neglected to get the VAT redemption certificate from the dealer. I just chalked that up to experience. It won't happen again. The Euro to Dollar rate was also not favorable - but what the heck! Confucious say, "When faced with rape, relax and enjouy it." :)

Here are some of my Bokeh shots:

Deirdre

Daniel

These were done on a 20D with a EF 50MM f/1.4

I used to have a Carl Zeiss 50MM f/1.4 on a Contax RTS II way back in the 80s and I loved that camera and lens. I can see how you must enjoy yours right now.

OP, no offense, but I dont really like that bokeh too much. I much rather prefer the bokeh posted by Mrvile and Zenmervolt.

And corkyg, did you do a firmware hack on the S3? because the S3 doesnt do RAW unless you upgrade the firmware with a hacked version
