sweet. always knew blu-ray was going to win, superior format, plus superior industry support. the fact that every ps3 counts as a bd player is also very good for them. its only a matter of time now. i hope universal wises up and starts releasing thier great movies on blu ray soon.

Yay! Here's an advance that has a REAL BENEFIT for the consumer!
Oh, wait...

lol. Celebrating BD+ is like celebrating the fact that the FBI has bugged your whole house, put a tracking collar on you, and shackled you to your bed, but not allowing you to even get close to your wife.

Yay for less rights, more control!

LOL! I was about to post something along the same lines...

Like I've said before, the format with the weakest copy protection may very well win, because it will be preferred by consumers.

Also... don't forget the rest of the world. None of these formats can win based on U.S. sales alone. Remember the "original" DIVX? that, too, was a U.S. exclusive....

consumers dont care about copy protection, pirates do, and pirates dont buy anything, therefore pirates are not consumers. and by that logic, the format with the weakest copy protection is bound to lose more money to piracy then the other format.

I posted this in a thread in the home video section, but I think it warrants it own thread here...if the mods disagree, then please lock/move or whatever...

the Blu Ray Disk Association has finalized the specs for BD+ which provides enhanced piracy protection (the key changes so that is it possible that two different disks of the same movie might have different encryption keys)...although pirating probably won't be impossible, it will definitely be more difficult...(waits for the first post that says "wonder how long it will take to hack?")

Fox Studios (21st Century Fox) has been waiting for this spec to be finalized before releasing any more titles...

Now that it is ready, the floodgate of Fox catalog titles will be coming soon...

Independence Day, Die Hard 1-3, Alien 1-4, True Lies, Predator 1/2, The Abyss, Fight Club, Office Space, Xmen 1/2, the list goes on and on...

All blu ray exclusives that won't be on HD DVD...

AVS Forum thread about it...

until movies cost 19.99 each... no one has won the format wars.

It would be nice to see more and more hd-dvd and blu-ray movies cost $19.99 or even a little bit cheaper. There a few places that'll have them at $19.99, I seen a few movies at target for that price. Even some movies that come out on regular ol dvd, some have been coming out at $19.99+

get back to your folding@home :|

Give me a f#cking break. That's like the DVD-A crowd saying SACD was dealt a death blow because of blah blah blah...Then you take a step back and realize CD sales are b!tch slapping both of them. You can talk all you want about Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD. The fact is, BOTH of them have pathetic sales compared to DVD. So just sit back and relax, because this format war is faaaar from over.

I freakin' hate stupid people. Keep thinking that way genius. I'm glad you're satisfied with the sh!t they've been feeding you. However, the more intelligent and creative "consumers" will re-engineer the products they BOUGHT to fit their needs.

will I have to re-purchase all those dvd's I own now?

what about a free trade in? afterall, I bought the movie, not the techonlogy?

Your overwhelming logic is overwhelming. I think overwhelming logic should just enjoy being overwhelming.

Great, more DRM.

I for one like to be able to back up my multimedia content onto my HDD...so i do not like hearing this kind of news...

Not that it'll stop the piracy scene...

Fair use

Oh, you can say bye-bye to Fair Use as the DMCA pretty much abolished that little idea. Fair Use may still be on the books, but the DMCA pretty much makes it null and void. And it's morons like playstation3 that let it go through. Why? Well because they're not smart. "Hey, I don't pirate stuff. Sure pass it through."

We will know who will win the new format war around Jan-Feb 08 after holiday shopping is over. One format will be pulling away.

I just want one to win. I don't care which one, but it reminds me of DVD vs. DIVX (that was the one that Circuit City and George Lucas was pushing right?) It was the disc that you could watch once or something. I can't remember because this was late 1998 early 1999.

I remember that. Never know what happened to it, and i was confused by the name DIVX. Is the DIVX as in DIVX DVDs related to divx as in the divx codec?

$100 to backup ~20 BR/HD-DVD movies (500gb HD) = $5/backup. Much better than spending $25 on a new disc. Things will be even cheaper once the 750gb hds come down in price, along with the 1TB SATA drives becoming mainstream. Once either format becomes more mainstream, it'll be much cheaper to make copies too.

Divx was the Circuit City scheme, supported by Lucas and Disney mainly. You had to have your Divx player connected to a phone line 24/7, it would "phone home" to check your usage and lock you out within xx hours. The name of DiVx has nothing to do with this thankfully failed format.

Hell I see quite a few regular DVD's that are over 20 bucks.

I'm a cheap bast~rd who almost never watches movies, so I'll be sticking with DVD until I can't buy DVD's anymore 🙂

And how much is it for the computer with blu-ray drive? and if you think your HDD will outlast a BD, think again.
