The big dipper is all cock-eyed...

Ten days ago I moved to Maui, after 33 years in Alaska. Tonight was the first night that I wandered outside in the dark. I looked up and the first thing I saw was the big dipper. Only it was turned almost upside down and the north star was far off on the horizon instead of almost straight up.

Just one of those things that you never notice till it changes I guess...

I was playing Trivial Pursuit last month and one of my questions was "what is the only US state that doesn't have Flies" I took a guess and it was infact Alaska. I fvckin hate flies, and a state that doesn't have them is bad ass. It's not uber cold there in the summer, so what's the reason for no flies?

They can't find jackets small enough to fit them.......

Actually I think it would have something to do with the climate (extreme cold).

God, that reminds me of my uncle's lake cabin in Minnesota. You couldn't go outside at night, period. It looked like those little chambers they put money in and blow it around for people to try to grab, just mosquitoes.

That's really cool though, Whoozyerdaddy. Talk about moving to diametrically opposed climates...

Actually it's not very humid here. 45-55% during the day. Just about perfect. NOTHING like the SE US. It feels a lot like Fairbanks in the summer.

Alaska to Maui? Nice.
I think he lived in Fairbanks (not some coastal city like Anchorage) which makes the move even more dramatic.
Well... I grew up in Fairbanks, then spent six years in Anchorage and spent my last three years back in Fairbanks.

It took me until yesterday to finally get settled here. I'm still waiting for my stuff to arrive. I guess it was temporarily "misplaced" at the Seattle dock. I'm hoping some of the things in the crate were't permenantly "misplaced" while the crate was "missing."

Anyway, my job hasn't started yet so today I can officially begin goofing off. I can't wait for my golf clubs to show up. :D

True. I moved to Seattle for a while, but I was never anything but a transplanted Alaskan. :p

Heh... I'm already getting that.

"What part of the mainland you from?"
"Alaska is NOT the mainland." ;)

Plus I couldn't stop referring to it as "The Lower '48" even while I was residing there. :p

I was jogging regularly while I lived there to get ready for the police academy. I was running home from work one night in shorts and a t-shirt. It was pouring rain and about thirty-five degrees out, but considering the December weather I was used to it was rather refreshing. Some cops slowed down and paced me for a bit, I think they figured I was an escaped crazy person or my backpack was full of stolen goods, to be out running in weather like that.

I fvcking hate you, you know that, right? ;)
We'd LOVE to move to the islands, ESPECIALLY Maui, but right now, it's just not gonna happen. MAYBE after I finish school, we'll be able to move to the Big Island, where property values are a bit more reasonable...

OK, enough of that...;)
Several years ago, we were on Maui for one of the big meteor shower events...WOW! The sky was so black, and the stars SO clear, that many of the incoming meteors looked like fireballs, instead of just little white flashes in the sky...there were SO MANY stars, that it took me a while to get my bearings and find some of the familiar constellations, and as you noticed, they were in a different part of the sky than I was used to...

In regard to your "jogging in the rain" post...I've noticed over the years, that even when it rains there, it's still nice and warm, so, unless it's a deluge, (which they get there occasionally) who cares?

I have answered a couple of PMs already but as to the BIG questions of why and how...

Imagine your life is an etch-a-sketch

1. Turn it upside down
2. Give it a good shake

That's about the only answer I can give. Also it helps if you've owned a house for the last 4-5 years and have a ton of equity saved up.

Here's a bit of trivia: Which state in the US is the furthest east?

The Allusion Islands make Alaska the farthest east and west as the international date line runs right through them.
