The "BFG" handgun version

I haven't decided what home self defense gun I would buy yet, but this looks pretty cool...

hand gun that shoots shotgun shells:

That will never come out. The feds put a hault on it saying that it's a short barreled shotgun. It's the Taurus Judge 28.

Stupidly designed gun. With such a short barrel, what kind of spread pattern? Look at the size of it...probably do more damage throwing it at someone.

This pistol is designed for close range self, and home protection, (also a great snake gun). the kick isn't all that bad, and it has it's own built in keyed lock. The barrel is rifled. Bird shot will get the bad guys attention, 00 will push him around, (a lot), and the 45 will finish the job.

The Judge is a piece of shit.

"The buckshot only penetrated one jug and went into the second one. That is equal to about 4.5 inches of penetration into ballistic gelatin or bad guy. Not nearly enough. "

-Referring to the .410 buckshot round out of the Judge

"It penetrated 2 1/2 jugs or equal to 7.5 inches of BG. Again, well short of the 12 inches minimum required for a defense load. The soft lead projectile was flattened out quite a bit."

-Referring to the .410 slug out of the Judge

The gun is a gimic. You are better off with a 9mm

Mixed reports on this monster; some sites report it was pulled by BATF as a shotgun <18" barrel, while others claim it has already been approved. In either case, good luck finding 28ga shotshells stateside, especially in buckshot loadings.

The Judge did better with the .45 Long Colt:
"It penetrated 5 jugs, or equal to 15 inches of BG.
Plenty of penetration, but the expansion was not very good, a problem with this particular bullet."

And the word is "gimmick".

Yes, the only viable load with the judge is the .45 LC. But at that point, its a 5 round .45LC revolver. Obviously not worth it.

I'm not so sure, did you see the size of those disks? Three, or six of those, plus a couple dozen large shot at the same time,----???
Oh, and just for the LOLZ, I like this guy!

The problem is penetration. Your not going to get deep enough to get into vital organs. Your going to piss them off real bad but your not going to stop them quickly. Put thick clothing or am arm in the way and it only makes it worse.

My father in law got a Judge awhile back, he speaks of it like it's the final word in revolvers. He's hard to talk to sometimes, so I just go along with it but honestly I don't understand the fascination with the .410 at all.

If I have to eradicate some squirrels, or maybe hunt some partridge or woodcock then a .410 makes sense. A .410 does a good job of taking out small things that are close without blowing them to shreds (load dependent of course).

But for a pistol? One for self-defense? Puh-lease! Better to throw in some modern .45 Long rounds if you want to use the Judge.

alkemyst has it right, the real BFG handgun would probably be a S&W 500. My family owns two of them for dispatching big ol hogs down south. I'm sure they'd work fine on bear and moose given the need.

*Apu* Such a mighty wallop! *Apu*

Unless you're shooting snakes or similar.

But you meant self defense against people, I know. Just nit-picking.
