I know most of us have read horror tales like this before, but if you take the time to read this article through, it should leave you seething:

Family haunted by avalanche of bills after son’s death: 'It’s continuous'

I don't pretend to have the perfect solution to our absurd patch work quilt of semi-coverage for some, for profit, directly at hand. All I know is we need to address this, at it harms working families who play by the goddamn rules. And yeah, I know that one of the main problems is the lack of unified political will. 🙁 🙁

America, what a country.

There was an interesting article/story today about an American woman who was living in iceland who found a lump ....

was told to go straight to cancer center, got screened, got second test to be sure all within a short time, and since she was a foreigner she had to pay a little bit of a copay, but it more or less amounted to around $3.

Also, while Iceland's system is MUCH better than the US, I don't think they are considered #1 in the world.
(Isn't USA ranked like #50 or something?)

Last I knew we were like #37 just behind Italy I think.

Well when the entire population of your country is the size of a large US suburb it tends to change things. I love when people make comparisons like this. There are so many factors to take into account beyond just population but it never fails that someone will compare small European countries to the United States as if they are even remotely the same.

Seems like you need citations to back up your claims. I'd be interested to peruse them if you did.

I agree. We allow people to get insanely rich off the backs of the sick and healthcare providers (doctors and nurses) while all they do is deny people care, which they would demand for their own family.

Well, they would "demand" care with their piles of free speech. That sweet sweet American dream.

Israel has one and since we all know you cannot find any wrongdoing with the Israelis, you must conclude universal healthcare is the right choice.

Oh by the way, India is working on one and China has it.

Population of EU is 500M and most of the member states have universal healthcare.

Look we spend more per capita and the most overall for worse outcomes.

Your post is just words.

The ONLY way to solve that problem is to make them use the same exact healthcare plans the rest of us peons use, and we know that isn't going to happen.
Congress critters have to buy their insurance from the exchanges like everyone else, unless they are covered by a spouse's plan. That provision was built into the ACA.

I'm sure they are getting free healthcare from their lobby buddies for life for helping pass (something).

We went the wrong way on health care deductions.

So what we could do in the short term is to cap liability based on financial considerations and the government wipe out debt like being proposed for students and increase deductions which pay for medical expenses. That gives time to work out what models work best, test and implement. That ensures stability of care and gives better financial access without being crushed. Then we need to look at compensation to those who cannot work. Disability is a joke, so an allowance for rent/mortgage, food, utilities etc. is given according to a formula to be determined.

We could begin the first part for the next tax year.
