gameFAQs is going to be running a best game ever poll, much like the character battles they do every year. you can nominate 15 games.
so far i've nominated:
Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Ocean 2
Legend of Dragoon
Halo 1
Super Smash Bros Melee
Contra
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Diablo II
StarCraft
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Unreal Tournament
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime
Metal Gear Solid
help me think of some other good games lol, i've got a bunch in mind i'm trying to sort through and i know i'm forgetting some
Legend of dragoon should not be on that list. I played almost all the way to the end (In the final boss dungeon, really never got a chance to finish it because something else side tracked me. I went back years later to try to continue on my save and found myself totally getting owned at that point

) and I'll say that it was a solid RPG, but it wasn't good enough.
Let us go over the main problem: storyline. The storyline isn't that great...there is some generated drama that just doesn't seem to draw you in the way other RPGs of the time did (pretty much any FF, Grandia, Wild Arms 2, Skies of Arcadia, etc). I found myself saying 'who cares' to the story progression for well over 80% of the time. It was not until I hit the arabesque-style city in the game (lord I don't remember any names lol) that things began to get interesting. I was actually starting to have fun playing it, and I thought "geez...it only took several hours to get interesting"....but that only lasted for a while. After that, things began to get boring again. It is amazing how the story was sooo detached from everything else. Really...the graphics in the game were excellent, the areas (although random at times...sometimes good level design isn't about putting together a bunch of totally different places - you need to blend them well) were very detailed and pretty...but a poor story can't save all of that. I can still talk about what happened in almost all FFs I played, and many other RPGs I played. I can barely recall what went on in Legend of Dragoon.
Now let us look at a game with a GREAT story: Grandia. Absolutely incredible if you have had a chance to play it. I was nonstop attracted the entire time. Very rarely was there a dull moment, it was a continuous orgasm of excitement and adventure. If you actually want to nominate LoD over Grandia, you are nuts (oh...and the battle system for Grandia is nowhere near as boring as LoD; of course, I play RPGs for their storylines, not for the battle systems so I don't care as much about LoD lack of battle vibrance)
Edit:
I personally think any list must be split by era and must be split by genre, and even then you could have several games fit in there. There comes a point where the games are just soo good, that the real differentiating factor is how much affinity the person naturally has to that game. But at that point, the game is near universally acclaimed anyways
