As far as games I have played

Resident Evil 4 is the best on the PS2
Prince of Persia Sands of Time and God of War get honorable mention

Legend of Zelda was best on NES

On PC
Quake 2 was my first experience with FPS multi-player and I still have a special place in my heart for Deathmatch and all the different mods
Hitman 2: Silent Assassin was probably the most open ended and replayable games I have ever played
Tribes 2 is probably my favorite multi-player experience SHAZBOT!!!!
Deus Ex very open ended, very replayable, but I am the type that has to explorer every corner of a game, so it took me a long time to play through it.
Rise of Nations most enjoyable resource gathering RTS for me
Myth II: Soulblighter simply the best RTS that I have ever played.
Civilization 2 a total time sink....this thing can suck hours away from your life. Civ 1 was great, but Civ 2 was absolutely the best. Civ 3 was a big disappointment for me and I haven't played Civ 4 yet.
Half-Life probably the longest FPS I have ever played and also the FPS with the most variety (i.e. not just turn the corner shoot a generic monster every 10 seconds)
Call of Duty (the original) The game was so short, that if you blinked you missed it, but it is probably my all time favorite pure FPS game....all action just great shooter mechanics (I love aiming down the sites)
No One Lives Forever and Blood two Monolith games and two of the funniest and funnest games I have ever played
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City the actual storyline gameplay wasn't all that great, but the absolute freedom to roam around and cause havoc and just overall toy with the game made it hours of fun.

Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3
Baldur's Gate saga
Diablo 2 (first one too)
X-COM series
System Shock 2
Fallout 2

Those are the only games that I played more than twice (99% of games I play once and that's it). HoMM Hot-Seat = takes the win overall. So those are my choices :)

EDIT: Added Fallout 2.

Oregon Trail

I hope you were joking with Oregon Trail. Yes, I too loved that game back in elementary school, but it really isn't that good of a game if you think about it. We're a bit biased because of all the fond memories we have of that game. The "Best Game Ever" should still be great if we played it today, and I don't think Oregon Trail fits that category.

Also, I'm willing to bet that those of you dissing Halo 1 probably never invested in the multiplayer. It was by far the best multiplayer FPS experience on console, and I still try to LAN Halo 1 every now and then. The subsequent Halos, well, suck ass and should not be anywhere on this list.

We played Oregon Trail in my history class this year. With a class full of people screaming out options, that game is still pretty dang fun.

nominations appear to be over, so i dunno when gameFAQs will start the competition. it'll be cool after all the character battles they've done to have something different. they did this years back and FF7 won.

dunno when they'll start running the polls or how many games will be involved, though.

so far i've nominated:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Star Ocean 2
Legend of Dragoon
Halo 1
Super Smash Bros Melee
Contra
Secret of Mana
Secret of Evermore
Diablo II
StarCraft
Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Unreal Tournament
Mario Kart
Metroid Prime
Metal Gear Solid

help me think of some other good games lol, i've got a bunch in mind i'm trying to sort through and i know i'm forgetting some

Legend of dragoon should not be on that list. I played almost all the way to the end (In the final boss dungeon, really never got a chance to finish it because something else side tracked me. I went back years later to try to continue on my save and found myself totally getting owned at that point ;) ) and I'll say that it was a solid RPG, but it wasn't good enough.

Let us go over the main problem: storyline. The storyline isn't that great...there is some generated drama that just doesn't seem to draw you in the way other RPGs of the time did (pretty much any FF, Grandia, Wild Arms 2, Skies of Arcadia, etc). I found myself saying 'who cares' to the story progression for well over 80% of the time. It was not until I hit the arabesque-style city in the game (lord I don't remember any names lol) that things began to get interesting. I was actually starting to have fun playing it, and I thought "geez...it only took several hours to get interesting"....but that only lasted for a while. After that, things began to get boring again. It is amazing how the story was sooo detached from everything else. Really...the graphics in the game were excellent, the areas (although random at times...sometimes good level design isn't about putting together a bunch of totally different places - you need to blend them well) were very detailed and pretty...but a poor story can't save all of that. I can still talk about what happened in almost all FFs I played, and many other RPGs I played. I can barely recall what went on in Legend of Dragoon.

Now let us look at a game with a GREAT story: Grandia. Absolutely incredible if you have had a chance to play it. I was nonstop attracted the entire time. Very rarely was there a dull moment, it was a continuous orgasm of excitement and adventure. If you actually want to nominate LoD over Grandia, you are nuts (oh...and the battle system for Grandia is nowhere near as boring as LoD; of course, I play RPGs for their storylines, not for the battle systems so I don't care as much about LoD lack of battle vibrance)

Edit:

I personally think any list must be split by era and must be split by genre, and even then you could have several games fit in there. There comes a point where the games are just soo good, that the real differentiating factor is how much affinity the person naturally has to that game. But at that point, the game is near universally acclaimed anyways

Awesome list of nominees.

I see Yoshi's Island on the list, but no one here has nominated it? Shame...one of the best platformers of all time IMO.

Ugh...Final Fantasy 7 VS Ocarina of Time in the Finals. Fail VS Fail More...

I voted for FF7 since I actually completed FF7 and somewhat enjoyed it. I stopped playing Ocarina of Time at the Water Temple. It didn't help that I played Ocarina of Time AFTER I played The Wind Waker.

Kinda hard to go back to those N64 days... ;)
