If you put it halfway up it'll feel a bit more balanced. Unless it's REALLLY HEAVY, then I would assume that most of them don't handle popcorn tins on a regular basis, so you should be able to pull it off without them realizing it.

I came up with another idea, this'll take some work to pull off, but if you do, it'll never be topped.

1. Find a tire at a junkyard that looks like a tire on one of the other teams cars.
2. Pull a rim off the car, take it to a shop, and have the tires swapped.
3. Remount the rim on the car, then give that tire a flat using a knife, nail, whatever.
4. Break into the trunk and replace his spare with the dolly tire.

Like I said, a lot of work, but I don't think they could top that.

My plan would only work if you could make sure that both items would arrive at exactly the same time.

Send a cake in a pretty box, something obvious...from your company
Send another box that is much more plain to the company
Then send a coffee can or something with a cylindrical shape to the company...and put the tire at the bottom of the can, and secure it with something that will barely hold the tire inside...I dont know if it will fit inside a coffee can? Then fill the can up with something thast really messy, such as coffee...
The top will still be sealed, and you can report that its contents have been delivered as a free sample to the company...
Put the can upside down so that after they pull it out they tilt it upside down and the bottom obviously falls out from the weight of the tire.

Obviously something needs to be done to make sure that the bottom doesnt come out during shipping...so make sure that whoever does this can do something right. Also if you can use a can opener to remove the bottom of the can the top seal wont look messed up. You can simply use tape to just enough to keep it from coming off but not enough to stop the weight of the tire. Good packing material will stop the bottom of the can from coming undone.

I dont know about you, or your tire buddy, but we have pizza parties at work sometimes. Three large pizza boxes stacked. Cut an 8 inch diameter hole on the top of the bottom box, and a hole on the bottom of the second box. In the 3rd box, on the top, a real large pizza and maybe a smaller box on top of those with cheese breadsticks, just to throw'em off. A 2-Liter pepsi, and you are ready to go. I'd glue the 2 bottom boxes together, just incase. You will need a man/woman on the inside to help, and a reason for them to have a pizza party. You could also do this at your buddies house if you get his wife/kids in on it. Im sure you can figure out the rest.

I like the idea of creating a vessel they would have to destroy to retrieve the wheel. I'll look into acrylic.

I think the acrylic can be topped...
Use wood, as its easier to work with, and paint it like a rubix cube after putting the wheel inside. Theres no way they wont accept a rubix cube, its just too cool.
Or you can just skip right to the 4-6 tons of concrete

It would be cool if you had a piece of glass blown around the tire...dont know how they would do it, but sure would be cool.

Know a welder? Have him weld up a box just bigger than the tire to put it inside. For one side of the box, only the rim of it will be welded metal, use carraige bolts to bolt lexan (not acrylic) into place so that the tire can be seen. Bolt it to something immobile where he'll find it.

Those are great! I used to consider unwrapping the gifts to be half the fun (the other half was in wrapping) - I did some creative things in the past like pop-riveting two sheets of steel together with a gift certificate between them, then soldering the edges, but those guys have me beat by a mile!
