I'm back. I fixed the driver problem so now the bass is improved. I know when a speaker sounds good to me, but I don't have any numbers...so this review is truely my opinion.
Treble/highs are ok. It's good compared to other computer/multimedia speakers. My buddy has a Yamaha YSTMS50 that I sampled on my computer. They both have the same setup:
satalite: 3/4" tweeter (diff types though)
3" full/mid range speakers (probably same)
20watts rms each sat. can probably kick them to 40 max each in bursts, thought I wouldn't try!
sub: altec has 6" long throw, yamaha has 6.5"
40watt rms
The satalites seem comparable. I couldn't choose 1 over the other. For the sub, the altec is definitely weaker. It's not as punchy. It's great for an ok setup, but I prefer the sub from the yamaha. Not only does it punch, it also does rolling bass very well. At loud volumes, the altec just sucks w/bass. I think it's cuz it's trying to stay accurate producing the midrange cuz the ears are more sensitive to that range.
The sub handles way too much of the midrange. I don't know what the crossover is, but the yamaha has it at 200hz. 200 is too high for a sub...my car sub crosses over at 80. Some home theaters have them at 120. My yamaha reciever at home has a sub output at 200hz. I'm not sure where the altec crosses over, but it definitely needs better midrange. It's either not there or it's too much when I use the built in eq for my mx300.
I'd say you get what u pay for. $50 for these speakers are normal...better than some speakers u get for the same price at the comp show.

I hate compgeeks... period. Those a-holes don't answer phonecalls.. respond to email and don't ship my speakers out on time. I ordered mine on November 6, and I have no idea why these geeks can't ship it.. BEWARE OF COMPGEEKS....BASH THOSE ASSHOLES

Well, I must say those speakers are awesome, but Computer Geeks...

I ordered a 80 gig maxtor HD from them TWO WEEKS ago, and had 2nd day shipping. But I still haven't recieved the order. I called 4 days ago and they said the order has been processed and should ship in the next 2 days. Well, today I FINALLY get an email from them stating that they can't process my order because my shipping and billing address is different. But they already charged my visa! So I called them today and the lady said they will ship it out today overnight if I had it go to to my billing address. So after all this hassle I will (hopefully) be getting my new HD. The lady on the phone was nice AND honest, she told me they were short on staff and have been behind processing orders. But still, I wouldn't order from them and expcet prompt shipping 100% of the time.

stay away from them, i ordered a pair of speakers and they charged me TWICE for them. now i have to go through all this BS with customer service

ook i just go these.... pretty sweeet but compgeeks.com is saying they are almost out... so if you want some quality speakers for about $50 then these are the speakers to get!

uh i don't know what you're smoking but i just talked to a CSR and they said they have hundreds left and they're getting more too.

Compgeeks got good prices sometimes, but their service blows.

I ordered 4 9 gig SCSI hard drives from them. One was bad. Shipped back to them next day cuz I needed it quick. 2 weeks later, got it. Also bad. Shipped back. Told them to TEST it out this time. They sent another bad one to me a week later.

finally bought another elsewhere and told them to refund me.

ThurzNite Have you discovered the subwoofer volume knob?? Crank it, then crank the bass in the advanced of your mixer, the crank it in winamp. You will go deaf!!!!!

Also peeps, to improve the sound from your subwoofer, place it in a corner of your room. Then grab some carpet and cardboard. cut 2 large pieces of carboard out, and the carpet to match. Then attach the carpet to your cardboard. (will call it soundboard from now on) Take the soundboard and place both pieces in the corner forming a _| type shape. The carpet will abosrb the low frequencies, then then will travel through the cardboard and along your walls... Whoa, huge difference in sound!!!! Try it!!!

PS the cardboard MUST BE CORRUGATED!

I have it turned up already. It still isn't as good as my friend's Yamaha setup. But then again, i can't expect too much from a 6" sub. Sunfire's minisub for home theater sounds way better for an 8" sub.
