I'm back. I fixed the driver problem so now the bass is improved. I know when a speaker sounds good to me, but I don't have any numbers...so this review is truely my opinion.
Treble/highs are ok. It's good compared to other computer/multimedia speakers. My buddy has a Yamaha YSTMS50 that I sampled on my computer. They both have the same setup:
satalite: 3/4" tweeter (diff types though)
3" full/mid range speakers (probably same)
20watts rms each sat. can probably kick them to 40 max each in bursts, thought I wouldn't try!
sub: altec has 6" long throw, yamaha has 6.5"
40watt rms
The satalites seem comparable. I couldn't choose 1 over the other. For the sub, the altec is definitely weaker. It's not as punchy. It's great for an ok setup, but I prefer the sub from the yamaha. Not only does it punch, it also does rolling bass very well. At loud volumes, the altec just sucks w/bass. I think it's cuz it's trying to stay accurate producing the midrange cuz the ears are more sensitive to that range.
The sub handles way too much of the midrange. I don't know what the crossover is, but the yamaha has it at 200hz. 200 is too high for a sub...my car sub crosses over at 80. Some home theaters have them at 120. My yamaha reciever at home has a sub output at 200hz. I'm not sure where the altec crosses over, but it definitely needs better midrange. It's either not there or it's too much when I use the built in eq for my mx300.
I'd say you get what u pay for. $50 for these speakers are normal...better than some speakers u get for the same price at the comp show.
