The average Russian drinks 18 liters of pure alcohol a year?

Isn't that only like a shot per day? (Almost exactly, if my math is right.) Seems like a healthy amount to me, at least if everyone is clustered around the average...

Did you factor in the proof? I'm pretty sure the OP means PURE alcohol (200 proof)

So even hard liquor, thats TWO to THREE shots per day.

That's really not a whole lot. That's a liter about every 3 weeks. Or two liters of 100 proof every 20 days. That's 100 mL a day or about 3 drinks worth.

I have no ide what "pure" alcohol means after reading the article. It could be 100% but that's only a couple drinks per day.

Although given media's proclivity for hyperbole I'm guessing they just mean normal vodka by "pure."

I drink roughly 3 liters of 80 proof vodka per month. That is 14.4 liters of pure alcohol a year not counting the beer I often drink and the occasional scotch/tequila/rum. I don't consider myself a heavy drinker at all, so 18 liters isn't that big of a deal.

If they mean just normal spirits in the 80-90 proof range that's less than 1.5 drinks per day. That's actually good for your health.

Math fun to get your geek on! A typical beer is 5% alcohol by volume. So that would be 360 litres worth of beer. That's equal to 633.5 UK pints, with is a standard beer glass. So it roughly equals 1.74 beers per day per person.

Vodka in Russia is like coffee in the U.S. or tea in Asia.
My Serbian friend started drinking vodka with his family when he was about 10 yrs old.

Ya but you gotta figure if you miss a day or two here or there, to keep the yearly average up, you still have to drink a lot in the long run.

And this is also a national average, meaning the people who do drink have to make up for those that drink very little or none at all.

And you have to figure young kids don't drink that much.

Even Moscow ?

Moscow traffic alone is enough to drive anyone to drink.

throw in the fact that it's fucking cold most of the year, you have soviet-style government, police and citizens willing to shoot you on site for the slightest offense, and the fact that you're surrounded by Russians....uh. wait.

wtf was your question again?

yeah, seemed really low to me. This is somewhat normal, iirc. I expect a much, much higher rate in Russia. The rate of liver failure in the USSR is preposterous.

a shot of vodka for breakfast is very common. Frankly, I don't see anything wrong with that. It wouldn't affect your daily performance if that's all you have until the evening. Still sounds icky to me, though. :\
