the ATOT link exchange (cross-link) thread

i have an idea, for everyone in ATOT who has their own site, create a thumbnail link banner, something arbitrary like 88x31 the standard size, and submit it in this thread.

there was talk of getting high rank on google by being cross linked to other sites, and the better the site, the more 'bonus' points you get on google's pagerank system.

so what do you say? im sure most of you site owners already have one, and i think this link exchange will be beneficial, whether you operate a service such as pic hosting, tech review, web hosting ;), or even blogs and photo galleries, it would be nice to have an ATOT member index.

who is willing to host this directory? or should everyone in this 'link exchange' have this directory on their site?

your thoughts/opinions on this, i know im down for it!:D

yeah i figure it would be an answer to "its 3am and im bored again"

once we get enough, we can get a preliminary page out, it doesnt have to be pretty or anything, just an html page, i suppose starting out.

do you think a list as in like

spikesoldier: <img>
agabooga: <img>

or like in a big block wall with the member's name as alt text?

<img><img><img><img><img><img>
<img><img><img><img><img><img>
<img><img><img><img><img><img>
etc

I would be in for an exchange. What if you have more than one site you would like indexed?

As long as you have the banners on all the sites it would still be beneficial. :)

BTW: Everyone should host their own banners, but have the directory on their own site, so they can customize it. That way the pages link FROM them and TO their site.... more linkage going about if everyone has one on their site.

Whoever gets it started should simply make a .txt file/html file that just has

<a href="link"><img alt="" border="0"></img></a>

So it can be simply copy/pasted, or changed to fit a website format.

what i propose is that every member's personal site just goes on a simple html page, the link is the little image you provide.

kind of like at the VERY TOP OF THIS PAGE, the anandtech naviagation where its says CPU/storage, etc

you provide the images, we build up an html page and link to your website.

to address your question, is it like you have a business and personal site?

i think a small banner would do it more justice. instead of just plain jane text links, you have 2,728 (88x31) pixels to express yourself. the image can also be a sign of what is on your site. e.g. if you run a fantasy basketball site, maybe you have abasketball on there.

plus with the images, you can stick 6 to 8 of them on the same line, and not have a huge long page, plus the colors and stuff would probably look cool next to each other in a wall fashion.

I'm in. But i'd also like to see a simple description of each website - I believe google is smart enough to skip pages of links and to not use them in page rank.

Well, I do see the benefi of text links, because I hear that having specific text as the link can affect a page rank.

click the portable video player help link in my sig.

it would either be the words PVP HELP, or the actual PVP player with my logo on the screen.

quick and dirty, if my domain wasnt in the process of resolving to new host, i would do it for you but i would create a 88x31 in photoshop, and scale down the words PVP and HELP and kinda slide help over PVP, its hard to explain but i think it would look real nice in that small resolution

Just an observation: Even though a graphic may be betterlooking if your goal is improve google pagerank text links would be better. Google treats 88x31 as an advertisements and it doesn't get at many "points" in the pagerank as a text link would.

Well, OP doesn't seem to want to get it started, so I will.

PM me both the web address you want linked to and text you want displayed as the link.

I will create a text file and upload it to my site when there gets to be a decent number of links.

The rules will be as such:
-In order to have your link on there, you MUST display the links on your page, and they MUST be accessible easily and through un-complex navigation (no deep-linking, no "hidden pages")
-No "NSFW" or adult content... we don't want to get anyone in trouble through no real fault of their own.
-One link per website that will display the links. If you have multiple websites, you put the page on all of them.
-You can modify the layout as you see fit, however, you may not change the text OR the links.
-Failure to comply with the rules will get you removed from the links.

Oh, and so people don't have to update every time someone new is added, do a server-side include of the .txt file I will upload (it will be XHTML 1.0 Transitional Compliant, for all you nuts out there ;) )

Just put it inside some <div> tags with some CSS to adjust the formatting to your liking, and there will be no need to update it!

Yeah, this is going to be great if people participate. The idea comes up in every thread about page ranking and googling things, but nobody ever gets it started.
