Yeah, this is going to be great if people participate. The idea comes up in every thread about page ranking and googling things, but nobody ever gets it started.

Kudo's to you for picking up the ball and running with it, I hope this becomes a huge success.

Oh, and so people don't have to update every time someone new is added, do a server-side include of the .txt file I will upload (it will be XHTML 1.0 Transitional Compliant, for all you nuts out there 😉 )

Just put it inside some <div> tags with some CSS to adjust the formatting to your liking, and there will be no need to update it!

not sure what this means

so does this page have to be linked off the main page or does it just have to sit on the server being accessible from other banner pages?

You have to be able to get to it from going straight to the URL... but it doesn't have to be one click away. Just don't bury it so it can't be found. (a web standards class I had said no page should be more than 3 clicks deep for the average site.) Web robots/crawlers usually can't find pages that aren't linked from the main page, but at the same time I understand that not everyone wants a randomness of links right off their main page.

but no way to get to the page from the main page.

See, I don't know that it will help page rankings or anything that way. If someone is wanting to do it this way, go ahead and submit the links and I'll try to find out if "hidden pages" still get picked up by webcrawlers and such.

They don't.

If there is no link to the page then they won't find it. Web crawlers simply crawl sites by following every link they can find. The more times its mentioned the better. For example the best way would be to just put a text link on the footer every page.

Bump?

The few people that have PMed me with their links have been put on the list. It seems it may be a bust because people don't want to participate or something.

For those that are on, or those that get added, the list can be found here:
http://www.renegadeonline.net/atotlinks.txt

Just copy/paste the code straight in to your code and you are good to go. Or, if you know how to use includes, you can just include straight from there and never have to update it.

Unless you have a page rank of 4 or more, this link exchange won't help. If you have a low page rank, you could also get penalized by Google for participating in a link farm.

I am sorry. 🙁 I just have a lot of SEO experience and am responding to the OP's original idea for google ranking. You could create a link/thumbnail directory and use a revolving javascript based "visit other anandtech forum members!" link generator. It won't help in search engines but could generate some referrals..
