How close do you have to be? I've tried to hit people in the heli's, but I guess I'm not aiming right.

Are any of the sniper weapons that can penetrate the glass semi-automatic? I often find in BF2 that when I am trying to sneak into position to snipe the pilot at takeoff that if I miss the first shot I don't get another because of the bolt action reload time on the M95.

Although personally I think it might be overpowered if a semi auto sniper rifle can do that because then you have that much better chance of shooting the pilot out while in flight...

The base sniper rifle will go through it, so I'm pretty sure all of them will. I've head shotted a couple pilots as they get to taking off. Always hilarious.

I usually camp with the engineer, so I can repair my apache if i have to, and wait for someone else to get in, then shoot them as they are looking at me with that silenced machine pistol thing that engineers first get. It works, it's hilarious, and I get a free apache out of it.

New Battlefield Blog Post: All Things Battlefield, Week Six 2010.

All Things Battlefield Week Six 2010!

* BY: GordonVanDyke
* POSTED: Feb 10, 2010, 07:03AM

A lot has been happening in Battlefield Universe this week and we wanted to wrap it all up in one nice post just in-case you missed something of interest.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2
Today we release a tutorial video of the Demo map "Port Valdez" BFBC2 Demo Video with VO by me. This video is for fresh recruits to the Rush gamemode, but Vets like yourself might enjoy it too. You can catch the video at the end of the post. And speaking of the BFBC2 MP Demo, it has been very well received with around 3 million downloads to-date.

We also released our second theme for the Xbox 360 with a squad focus style to it. You can find all BFBC2 related content on the Xbox 360 here.

For the PC Beta players we want to thank you for all your feedback so far, it has been extremely valuable to help ensure a fantastic first PC release on Frostbite. We also want to mention we have contacted PBBans to help us work on a global ban-list solution to help ensure the best experience for everyone playing BFBC2 on the PC.

Lastly, make sure to check out the Ultimate Prestige to learn some possible inside info on BFBC2 at http://www.ultimateprestige.com/ and for those that have a Cisco IP Telephone 7945 or 7965 can use this image for their wallpaper.

Battlefield 1943
Next week Battlefield 1943 is "Deal of the Week" on Xbox 360 for 800 MSP!

Battlefield 1942
We'd like to thank IGN for selecting Battlefield 1942 as their 9th choice for game of the Decade. You can read the full article here.

Is the RPG-7 really better against vehicles than the Carl-G?

forums.penny-arcade.com

I dicked around on a server testing and the RPG is better against armor. This wasn't the most rigorous of testing, but the results seemed pretty consistent. This is roughly the damage done by a single round against the t90.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Front Side Rear Top
RPG 29 50~ 55 62
Carl 22 41 41 22

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

==================================================

Defensive tips on Port Valdez

forums.penny-arcade.com

Steps to successful first point defense

1) Kill all trees. Trees are not your friends. They herald your doom and conceal your foes. Man those mounted machine guns and cut down those leafy, silent traitors as soon as humanly possible. Form up grenade launcher and RPG regiments to blow those barked bastards back to the stone age. Once those evil things are disposed of, and the earth salted in their place, the attacking force will have a much harder time moving forces up in place to strike quickly. You will have much better warning. Their ATVs and Tanks will come under more precise fire. Trees are an agent of the enemy and must be destroyed.

2) Get one squad or so to camp the base of Sniper-Hill. Get 3 medics and 2 assault. Lay down ammo and medpacks and start chucking grenades like if you keep doing it you're going to win something. Because, god damnit, snipers need to die. The rocks provide a fairly defensible area as long as you cover one another.

3) Deny the enemy his precious machines. It is of the utmost strategic importance to not only remove the enemy's ability to bring the mechanized part of "mechanized infantry" to the front, but also the keep him neutered. Make every effort to not destroy that ATV rider's C4 blingged out ride, but to shoot him from it and claim it as your own. Make it a trophy. Do laps around point B and lord your fresh wheels over other grounded troops. But most importantly keep it safe and it won't respawn for them to turn against you. Like the girl at the bar your friend is hitting on you must make her your own. Park it behind the under-construction building and strengthen your grasp and the dying enemy. This goes doubly so for the tank and BDMA. Much harder to capture, but ever so worth. Make every effort to cripple but not kill those pieces of armor. They are the golf trophies with which you will bludgeon the attackers to death with.

4) Go engineer. It is a thing of beauty to tag a tank and then see, almost simultaneously, 3 rockets shoot to the skies and make an immediately and deadly 90 degree turn to ruin some poor guy's day. Also, if you're recon you should be calling in mortar strikes. Is your mortar strike on cool down? No? Then call one in, Nancy. They're unlimited and you're not going to be C4'ing anything while you're hiding in the under-construction building.

==================================================

With more people getting up to level 11 in the beta, and getting Tracer darts, the lives of tank whores are being dramatically reduced.

Recent Tracer Dart info I came across:

1) Confirmed by Demize99 on Twitter, Tracer Darts have NO "bullet drop".
2) The antidote to tracers? Smoke!

Not sure if the vehicle smoke spec is available in the beta, or the Assault smoke grenade. If the Assault smoke grenade is available, I'd like to hear some feedback on if it eliminates tracers from a friendly vehicle, and tips on how to do this. Fire a smoke grenade at your own tank?!?

Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is on Pace to Become the Fastest Downloaded Demo in EA History.

Are hand held anti-tank weapons in the absence of tracer dart help similar in effectiveness to BF2 anti-tank weapons? Or in other words..are AT rockets still able to be wire guided by the person firing them even if there is no tracer dart to lock onto?

And when you DO have a tracer dart, I'm assuming you have to get the lock before you fire, and that the missles will not acquire a lock while in flight?

Is there still a warning tone for vehicles about to get popped by AT?

The RPG-7 and Carl-G are dumb-fire, in the absence of a tracer dart. The AT-4, unavailable in the beta, is wire-guided, and not tracer dart compatible. Pick your poison.

Tracer-Dart compatible weapons must lock on BEFORE firing. No in-flight locking. They must be "zoomed in" for this locking to happen.

I have been in a vehicle that had been darted, and there are warning tones, one when you have the dart, another when a lock is aquired. Also, there is a visual cue of a red/purple-ish set of square brackets "[ ]" on the vehicle HUD.

I believe you earlier said darts would even stick to infantry...but will they stick to the ground, or buildings,etc? I wonder if there's any way to think outside of the box with this; such as to use splash damage on a well hidden sniper.

Speaking of snipers, I didn't see claymores on the weapon list and I searched this thread and not one single mention - aren't we all gonna miss those :)

I myself was just considering how well sticking a tracer dart on the M-COM would work. How many RPG's does it take to take out a crate?

I'l check it out this evening, and post back.

Bwahaha, hitting an Apache with an RPG is awesome.

Aside from that small victory I die a lot. This always happens when I am new at Battlefield games but in this one it seems that some of the guns are horribly innacurate.

You've heard it a thousand times. It is a common complaint about Battlefield, "I emptied a whole clip in to a guy, and he turned around and killed me with one (or two) shots!". There is a large faction of Battlefield players that LIKE the fact that they can survive being shot at, and live to turn the tables on their attacker. You can tell the folks working on the PC beta of BFBC2 took this to heart. Maybe they took this a little overboard. I've been knifed a few times by a guy that seemed to run straight through the barrel of my (firing) gun to get to me. Be interesting to see if this gets adjusted in the retail release.

Mortar strike is just too awesome :). Also, UAV's are always always taken. And I put like 7 sniper shots into a UAV and it didn't go down :(, it was only like 20 feet from me too. I can't fly heli's for my life, though I've only tried it once, but got shot down right away.

Otherwise, so good so far.

That only takes 1-2 shots depending on how much health the UAV has. Just gotta remember you have to aim way far away if it's flying, otherwise your bullet will fly right by.

How does the missile work on the UAV exactly? I can get it to fire but I kind of just hold down the mouse button to aim it and then click madly until it finally launches a damn missile. It would be nice to know exactly how it works, and it would be nice if it showed if it was reloaded or not. From what I can tell there's no way to tell if you can shoot again or not.

When you fire it, the missile goes to where your crosshair is pointed. It's tough to keep it still because the UAV has a tendency to move but try your best. The small orange box around the crosshairs when you fire indicates when the missile is ready to fire again. When it disappears, you're good to go.

Yeah the UAV is very, very weak. I think it should have more health personally. It's not like it's a particularly powerful weapon. The missile does almost no splash damage and is difficult to aim and reloads very slowly. The most effective use of the UAV is spotting enemies. Is there another weapon on that thing that I don't know about?

How many times do we have to go over this? Console versions of FPS games have auto aim.

What the fuck is streaming support? What the fuck is PBBans? Seriously, fuck this stupid Twitter shit up it's ass. Stupid <140 char posts give no details to those of us who haven't been following this shit for the last 3 years.

Cry more. Seriously...you couldn't google PBBans? It's a streaming service that links all subscribed servers and takes their data, looks for hacked files and whatnot, and maintains a master ban list (MBL). If you get put on the MBL, you're not just banned from the server you were on, but all servers that subscribe. It's very handy to get rid of hackers.

That sounds like every implementation of punkbuster ever.

In the retail release, the secondary fire vehicle specialization will add a machine gun to the tank, chopper (both positions?), and UAV. This spec is included in the Limited Edition, so everyone will have it available at launch.

How many times do we have to go over this? Console versions of FPS games have auto aim.

As i mentioned, the guy ran straight up until my gun was on his chest. I don't think I should be missing at that range, even without auto-aim.

That sounds like every implementation of punkbuster ever.

With just Punkbuster, the most you get is kicked for a few minutes. Haven't I heard you say that in the past? (Forgive me if it wasn't you.) Punkbuster supports external anti-cheat services for ban-lists, and when it was announced that DICE would restrict access to the server files, PBBans, one of the biggest ant-cheat services, said they could not support BFBC2. There was much drama directed at DICE about how they are were screwing us over by restricting access to the server files. "You're no better than IW, after promising us you were different! This game is dead to me! Waah.."
Well, they worked it out. Good news for people that want to play on well admin-ed servers without cheaters.

Couldn't they do a monthly or quarterly rolling encryption of critical files to mess up cheat programs?

In addition to PB/pbbans etc of course.

The missiles destroy tanks pretty damn fast if you hit them, pretty sure I've blown up Bradley's in 1 hit with it. Also, taking out snipers with a missile is pretty hilarious.

Bah yeah I didn't mean "weak" as in "ineffective" (poor phrasing by me), I meant they're squishy (easy to kill). The UAV is actually rather an effective tool if used correctly (lots and lots of spotting between shots), but I think it should be tougher. If a machine gun is added as GullyFoyle suggested then maybe not.
