Well I remember when there was all that talk because of the Color Grading Mod Dice was about to release a on/off option but then retreat on that, saying that the Gray/Blue coloration was part of BF3 Identity, never heard about it being for balancing.

Agreed. They are releasing new games so often now they are using the color grading to provide an even more drastic change between iterations.

People love new shiny things, so if the game doesn't look anything at all like the previous iteration they are more likely to overlook the fact that this is just BF3 with a 'newer' game engine and different maps.

Guru3D has some new benchmarks up where they show 1920x1200 using 1.5gb Vram @ Ultra 4XAA. This is about a full gig less than what other charts and people report. I checked my usage and it was pegged at 2gb. Maybe its because they tested single player? I'm really hoping they are right and I am wrong, because that would be great.

There is a problem with this tests and its the reason why we are getting results all over the place, FOV, the FOV in bf4 can go from 70-120, and that has a huge impact on performance, since bigger FOV means it has to draw more.

So it is currently taking me over 5 minutes to load a map on my HD. I already tried new GPU drivers and doing a repair installation. I have an i5-2500k/8 gigs ram/7950

What should my next move be? I was thinking about testing the HD itself. I can move the game to my SSD but I really don't want to. I could try reinstalling as well or maybe deleting certain files and running another repair.

any tips for a newb? I just wanna kill people so I choose assault class and have either the default rifle or the pistol. I either get sniped or I assist kill someone once in a blue moon. Are the good players just good at knowing where the pick-off points are and mostly stay still? And/or mostly stay in set familiar areas and wait for noobs to come through?

When I'm moving I try to stay against walls and crouch a lot but still get tagged. Doubt its better to run in a straight line.

Do I have to rank up to get a sniper rifle? Seems like I need a better weapon. Playing campaign doesn't earn me anything for MP does it?

Yes. Most of my deaths are when I am shot in the back. There is also the vertical aspect, where you are scanning 240 degrees but dont factor in height. You just have to learn the maps. It may actually be better to be constantly moving, but with purpose. Or camp bottleneck areas.

You get a bolt action by default. I think you also get a P90 and a LMG if you play singleplayer.

A concrete list of what's new... is sorely lacking.

All you have to do is pay attention: What is new BF4 vs. BF3
Off the top of my head
  • Chinese faction
  • Working in-game VOIP
  • 5 in a squad vs 4
  • return of Commander
  • Leveloution
  • Pick -up weapons
  • More soldier-guided rockets
  • Changing weather conditions
  • new game modes Obliteration and Defuse

I agree with the move to the SSD. Load times were greatly improved in BF3 for me when I did that.

I've had two or so matches so far crap out after playing for at least 20 minutes. Of course, these are always the ones where I'm actually doing well. I've hit rank 4 at least twice now, but never got credit.

Are you quitting before the map is over? I always make sure to stay in the server until the next map loads.

I just get disconnected every time the round is done... It's gotten to the point where I just stop trying to join a game until there's a fix.
My computer has crashed over 10 times since the release of the game.

For a game that was so heavily pushed by AMD. It seems like only AMD users are suffering. Nvidia users aren't even crashing, their issues are all server side.

I'm an AMD user. I have the occasional crash, not nearly as much as day 1. I played around 12 rounds tonight. I had one crash and that was on exiting the server.

Its funny, but no one uses it until they hear someone else use it. I was in a the same squad for 3 rounds with no talking, and I rambo revived a squad mate in front of 3 enemies and apologized over voip cause I knew they could at least hear it. Then he started talking, and the other two guys as well. So we started doing callouts. This kind of thing happens when someone starts talking. Very small ahole factor. Only once was a guy a jerk. Since its push to talk to you dont get a lot of constant static or music.

I wonder if its because there isnt anything to configure, and people assume its off unless you jump through some hoops. I didn't use it for awhile because I thought I had to set up a mic device and what not like in BF3. I was surprised when it just worked.

I dont talk because whenever I have talked in the past it's like I'm talking to myself. So I stopped.

I stopped caring. As long as it doesn't crash and I had fun.

An annoyance to add:
The popups in the bottom right that are constantly telling me that so and so joined this game or stopped playing. I need to see my ammo and health count damnit!

Of course, these are always the ones where I'm actually doing well.

Sigh. This always seems to be the case. I was on a kick ass Rush team. Medics were reviving, support actually threw down ammo, engineers repairing. We were demolishing the other team and I had a very nice score. So of course the server crashes

I was looking at the VRAM usage, and its definitely uses every bit I have with mostly Ultra settings and AA off, FXAA high, FOV 90. Dropping things down to High buys me about 200MB if I restart the game, 100MB if I dont. I was going to just get another 680 2GB as a band-aid, but I dont think its going help. In general the game just doesnt feel right. Both CPU and GPU usage is around 50%. I guess I'll try disabling HT and some of the other things. I almost wish I didn't start investigating this.

It will certainly help. I have 680 SLI and i'm visiting triple digit FPS quite often with excellent scaling.
