Events in landmark 'Spider-Man' issue have fans in a frenzy

ASM_700_Cover.jpg

The just-released 700th and final issue of "Amazing Spider-Man" features plot developments that shake the Spidey-verse to its foundations.

And now -- due in part to the abundance of social media and the intense interest in Spider-Man's alter ego, Peter Parker -- a firestorm has erupted, after Marvel revealed that Parker will die,
and the role of Spider-Man will be taken over by his archenemy, Doctor Octopus. The just-released "Amazing Spider-Man" #700 marks the end of one of the most popular comic book series of all time
after 50 years. All parties involved maintain that the changes are quite permanent, and next month the saga begins anew with the release of "The Superior Spider-Man" #1, with the Doc, Otto Octavius,
stepping into the Spidey suit.

you know who needs to die? comic books. and not like that "superman is dead so run out and buy 15,000 of these priceless collector's items right now" kind of death.

Wut, Dr Oct as the new Spiderman?

The Superior Spiderman? lol, what a joke with these adjectives.

What's next after Oct dies? Lizard Man takes over as the Bestest Spiderman?

$8 for a fucking comic book, and they wonder why that "art form" is dying.

lol

Meh the problem is not the price or the medium...its the content. Sounds crazy, but there are some drawn stories that I would pay $8 for, I love a good story. I think the Asians/Japanese/Koreans have figured out that particular market. Last time I checked out an American picture story it was like 20 pages of "WHAM!' "BLAM!" "SLAMMO!" "KAPLOW!" and "I'll get you next time!". Not worth $8, even if it were 50 pages.

I'm sure there's a few good American comics/drawn stories or whatnot...but they seem to be few enough that I haven't run into one yet. You know what they say though, a picture is worth a thousand words...it's true. It's much more interesting to see the ground than to read a page or two describing the size/shape and type of grass growing on it, so there is an advantage in drawing for those who actually like to enter the world they're reading about...it just has to be interesting enough to want to visit.

Then you are part of the problem. Comic books cost less than a dollar just a decade or so ago. Even the super special edition ones were like $2.-2.50 at the VERY most.

I wouldn't even pay a dollar for the American comics I've seen...though last christmas I think it was (or the year before that), I picked up a big case of mixed old/random comics (about 300) for $10 to give to my sisters kid. Told her to go through it, I really don't care what happens to them.

If I'm getting a books worth of great content and I enjoy the art used, I don't think $8 is entirely unreasonable.

Edit: Oh and like I said earlier, because of the drawings you don't need as many words...so typically a drawn story will be "smaller/shorter".

More power to ya. I could buy 3 games off Steam with that money. I mean there is literally no reason why a comic would need to cost $8 at retail, ever.

meh. won't matter Parker will be back in 3-6 months. They won't/can't kill him off. Spiderman is one of marvel's huge markets.

it will be something like they killed another of his "clones" or he got stuck in a time line or he was brought back by the spider god or whatever.

This.

Sounds like a gimmick to extract extra $ from gullible children. Amazing will be back after a couple months.

I remember paying $1.50 for Sonic the Hedgehog back in the mid 90's. I know inflation causes everything to go up in price, but holy crap. For $8 that thing better have gold laced sheets.

The only thing I enjoyed about this comic was the back and forth on Twitter from Stan Lee and Dan Slott (the writer of this crap)
@danslott what a gift, some guys give a nice cigar, a watch, but no not you, I get a dead #PeterParker Thanks for the bday wishes my friend! — stan lee (@TheRealStanLee) December 27, 2012
.@therealstanlee HA! Printing that out now. THAT’S goin’ up on the fridge! I am NEVER taking that down!!!! :-D — Dan Slott (@DanSlott) December 27, 2012
@danslott at lest you’ll have a good price of writing in your house. Ha. Keep up the amazingly spectacular work you always do!

Yeah, why does anyone get worked up over this stuff? They can just make up an equally crazy thing that nullifies it.

My friend was telling me about this and apparently its some mind-switching thing and Doc Oc keeps all his own memories or some shit so they'll just say that Parker was in him the whole time and they'll clone Parker and find a way to transfer his mind over.

I mean, holy shit, they've been doing crazy dumb stuff in comics forever and they shit all over stuff and then turn around and shit all over that.

this sounds like the death of superman. that made the new york times iirc. obv they brought him back

anyhoo, as far as comic prices go - they are overpriced. i'd buy them if the ones i want didn't cost a significant percentage of my avg monthly wage. even the digital ones are overpriced. make them 99c/p and i'd be all over it

Doc Oc? Seriously? Wow. This might be as bad as when the Incredible Hulk was changed to Incredible Hercules.

to be fair, grayson taking on the cowl worked quite well from what i read and lead to batman inc on bruces return. although that's going to be down to the writer involved (morrison?)
