Brilliant however (one of Sabine's sponsors) is terrific if you enjoy learning and quality documentaries! :)

And "cemented in yesterday" in what way? Smart as Sabine may be (smarter than me!) I don't believe she'll be designing a working warp-drive (sub in FTL drive name of choice lol) any time soon.

BUT I already believed it was possible.
Of all the pop science channels I’ve come across Sabine is by far the best IMO, she cuts through the bullshit and calls it as it is, for high degrees of objectivity, source criticism, layman communication skills and dry nerd comedy, she is unrivaled. Based on everything else I’ve seen from her (see for an example her debunking of the quantum eraser experiment that had other peeps running erratic for a while), if Sabine says FTL might be possible, Im inclined to believe that at face value.

Of course she wont be designing a ftl drive. She is a theoretical physicist.

Watch like 5 minutes then read the comments about the guy with the beard. They are fantastic.
I saw the interview back then and “Bearded Guy” immediately failed the smell test… google some other interviews with him and it gets worse.

Of course it's possible. Just burn a wormhole in the fabric of spacetime with a really intense laser.

Some guy is doing that on a small scale, to test his theory that the Bermuda Triangle disappearances were actually teleportation. Don't ask me for link. Not in the mood to search.

Could swear I said that already! ;)

She's first and foremost a teacher though and a skilled one .... I admire her enthusiasm!

Foremost? Maybe, I dont know, seems to me she’s trying to crack that quantum gravity that keeps eluding us…

She's a college professor who also does a lot of research .... not exactly an unusual thing.

Universities are often (at least partially) funded by research.

One question if you were an alien life form who is intelligent, mind you i said "IF" would you want anything to do with us???? Just a thought...
Hell no! This planet is dangerous, and the last thing you would want is give us any hint on what sort of research will lead to FTL travel if that is possible. Have kill each other for basically no reason at all, think what we would do to creatures that are nothing like us. We would be a scourge on this galaxy.

But, while the Fermi paradox was originally focused on why we have not had a visit from an alien, it can also be generalized to why we have not seen evidence of alien civilizations out in galaxy. It is just as valid to ask why when we look out on the big dark that is space we don't see any anything that might be signs of civilization.

I could see how other intelligent life would want to visit us out of curiosity if they're anything like us. Then again as you mention if they ARE anything like us they might just end up killing us all for sport or something.

We would most likely be at the mercy of any aliens advanced enough to make it over here so it would mean crossing our fingers and hoping they're nice. That's not a great bet.

I agree completely, but I'm not sure there is anything at all we can do about it. Not like we can hide our civilization. Anyone looking at our planet will know that there is a civilization here.

Being two thirds water, maybe their scanning methods haven't yet discovered the one third part of land and even then, maybe they detected our deserts and arctic areas only.

Alien report to superior: Lots of liquid. Fair amount of snow and ice. Lots of sand.

Superior: Crap! Let's move on to the next planet!

Ok besides wormholes which do work within the framework of General Relativity Miguel Alcubierre’s warp drive also works within General Relativity.

Basically he wanted to see what a Star Trek Warp Drive solution would look like inside General Relativity.

dv3txnCKTcakbgL3mGQF2C.jpg

His solution was one where space was compressed in front of the vehicle and extended behind with the vehicle itself residing in an area of flat space. This has the benefit of preventing the crew from experiencing any acceleration or time dilation while traveling along at super-luminal speeds.

Now this is theoretically possible and in reality the universe has exhibited the effect during its inflationary phase shortly after the Big Bang.

The two sticking points is Alcubierres warp metric required more energy than is contained in the universe and exotic matter which warps space the opposite of normal matter and quite possibly doesn’t exist.

Enter Dr Harold “Sonny” White.

There are many solutions to Einstein’s General Relativity equations so Dr White modified Alcubierre’s solution until it only required an amount of energy equivalent to converting Jupiter to energy. So now at least hypothetically possible. I believe he did further refinements bringing energy requirements down farther.

There may also be a solution to the exotic matter problem. Dr White was theorizing negative pressure may provide an acceptable substitute for exotic matter. We can generate this effect (very minutely) through the Casmir Effect. A very weird quantum effect.

At any rate FTL is currently impossible for us right now but it is mathematically possible and at least right now hypothetically physically possible too.

They’re here!!!!

But lol 10 feet tall

I've been waiting for pics. Everybody has cell phones and the "witnesses" called 911 so we know they had at least one. Oh wait, nevermind, I forgot about MIB.

Found 'em.

I'm a big sci-fi head, and when I was younger often thought about how cool it could be to meet another civilization. The book then the movie Contact in other words.

Now, seeing what a mess people have made of this planet and our societies, I honestly think we'd better hope nobody finds us anytime soon. Most likely, they'd (rightly) see us as a dangerous future pest and wipe us out before we infest galactic civilization with fake news and self-destructive ways. Agent Smith said it best, so far mankind has proven itself to be a virus.

Our planet already thinks so.

I think any kind of evolution anywhere will meet this inflection point, to make it or not to make it, that is the question. When we finally crack fusion, we will crack food and water security and finally achieve equilibrium with the eco system.
Its always darkest before the dawn.
I reject your defeatism :).

Hey, maybe the aliens are here to see if we’ll crack it or not… wouldnt it be hilarious if there was a deadpool outthere on the human race? — Oh and a grey or two is trying to fix the game in their favor?

Well, I hope you optimists are right and I'm wrong :)

I think we are likely to go the way of the Krell (spoiler alert for a 70-year movie I guess.....). With social media as our version of the Mind machine that released their Id as destructive forces. I don't think technology is our problem. We can probably achieve fusion or teleportation or faster than light travel if it's at all possible. But unfortunately we are still basically shit-flinging tribal apes that will kill our neighbors for a bigger piece of the kill. We still believe in sky fairies and generally delude ourselves at every opportunity, refusing to face harsh truths. Easier to find fake news that tells you what you want to hear and blames <insert bad guy> for any actual problems.

We are not racing to achieve equilibrium with the ecosystem--we are racing to erase our and a lot of other species' parts in it. We might survive climate change but it's not looking fun for our kids and their kids unless some friendly aliens come down and solve it for us at this point.

video questioning it
Yea. Jeremy. Jeremy does not pass the smell test.

I keep going back to what I read.
If there was indisputable proof Aliens from another Planet existed the former President certainly would have revealed it by now.
- If Trump had knowledge of Aliens he woulda spilled the beans 1000%. It's a matter of Newtonian laws of physics, tautology and death and taxes.
1000% agree.

Wait a minute... those documents that is so top secret that they cant be part of the trial... that he showed around to "friends"... You think maybe?

Nah. He and his cronies would be looking at ways to profit from that somehow. Alien pets? Alien slaves with electric shock torture chip implants to keep them enslaved and do their bidding? An army of such aliens to protect the border with Mexico or use that as leverage to make Mexico pay for border security?
