Widespread ignorance bordering on idiocy is our new national goal. It’s no use pretending otherwise and telling us, as Thomas Friedman did in the Times a few days ago, that educated people are the nation’s most valuable resources. Sure, they are, but do we still want them? It doesn’t look to me as if we do. The ideal citizen of a politically corrupt state, such as the one we now have, is a gullible dolt unable to tell truth from bullshit.

An educated, well-informed population, the kind that a functioning democracy requires, would be difficult to lie to, and could not be led by the nose by the various vested interests running amok in this country.

I recall being stunned some years back when I read that a majority of Americans told pollsters that Saddam Hussein was behind September 11 terrorist attacks. It struck me as a propaganda feat unsurpassed by the worst authoritarian regimes of the past—many of which had to resort to labor camps and firing squads to force their people to believe some untruth, without comparable success.

I think this article is pretty spot on considering the thread today about our govt wanting to kill another American citizen without trial. So many have been dumbed down into believing if the govt writes a law that legalizes itself to kill without trial then that is due process. And if the govt labels you a terrorist without trial then it is ok for it to kill your fellow citizen. These are bad bad people because the govt told me so. Dont ask for evidence because the govt will label it a state secret. Just trust them. They have our best interests at heart.

I guess go to our well-paying jobs, in safe suburban neighborhoods with great school systems and almost exclusively two-parent households. Then go home to our large houses where there are no gangs, drugs being sold, or multiple people being shot every week. Then we'll count all the money we have left over after not paying the city taxes, not dealing with panhandlers, and corrupt aldermen.

Then we can ponder some of the wisdom from you guys, like how poverty is what causes crime, minorities can only succeed because of affirmative action, "income inequality" is the biggest danger facing the nation, and more.

The social sciences have traditionally assumed that education is amajor determinant of citizens' political orientations and behavior. Several studies have also shown that intelligence has an impact. According to a theory that conceptualizes intelligence as a burgher (middle-class, civil) phenomenon—intelligence should promote civil attitudes, habits and norms like diligence, order and liberty, which in turn nurture cognitive development — political orientations should be related to intelligence, with more intelligent individuals tending towards less extreme political orientations. In a Brazilian sample (N=586), individuals were given the Standard Progressive Matrices (SPM) and a questionnairemeasuring age, gender, income, education and political orientations. It's hard not to go with your gut. Seeing all sides of an issue is often avoided in favor of those who agree with us.

I see some news media attempting to only appeal to their consumers' emotions. I turn away from that whether I agree or not. I have more than just an emotional mind with its sometimes irrational reactions.
