The Abyss (specifically the Special Edition)

It's on AMC right now, although I missed the first three and a half hours of it (four-hour runtime on TV). I can't tell yet if this is the special edition, but man do I love this movie.

It still holds up over 20 years latest IMHO and is just great acting all around and besides, you can't go wrong with James Cameron

I would have said that too before Titanic and Avatar, however things change.

The Abyss is great none the less.

Watch the Special Edition. It ties up all of those loose ended from the theatrical release and is a much better movie for it.

Cameron's a hack. I love T1 and don't mind The Abyss, but everything is else is insanely overrated and does not hold up over time. Same thing will happen to Avatar that has happened to most of his other films.

I didn't like the giant wave or the heightened east vs west aspect of the special edition.

I liked it better without the cold war aspect because it totally changes the way the aliens are presented.

Aliens and T2 have held up fine over time. Titanic is still #6 on the all time list for domestic gross adjusted for inflation. So I am not sure where you are coming at for his movies not holding up over time.

Warning: Every DVD issued of The Abyss is still non-anamorphic, making it look almost like a laserdisc transfer. Still no word of a blu-ray release yet.
