Aliens and T2 have held up fine over time. Titanic is still #6 on the all time list for domestic gross adjusted for inflation. So I am not sure where you are coming at for his movies not holding up over time.

I'll ignore the Titanic comment because that is irrelevant. What does it have to do with anything? There are tonnes of shit movies that make a lot of money, so what?

I watched Aliens on the weekend and it feels dated, even more so than Alien. I used to like it quite a bit, but I was bored during good chunks of the film. Seriously, re-watch it and in many parts it feels like a cheezy 80's film. Cameron cannot write characters without relying on terrible caricatures and stereotypes; they really are painful to watch on screen. You can get away with special effects not holding up, since that is always going to happen, but you need decent characters to make something last.

Cameron was able to do that with T1, but made the kid so obnoxious in T2, it's pretty much unwatchable now.

I guarantee the same thing will happen to Avatar in 5-10 years. It has the most worthless cast of characters since Transfomers 2.

How many of those shit movies are in the top ten all time list adjusted for inflation? These are some of the the movies that Titanic shares the top ten list, Gone with the Wind, Star Wars, E.T., Doctor Zhivago, The Exorcist. Quite frankly shit movies don't get in the top ten of all time adjusted for inflation without being good. If you look at the top 10 list not adjusted for inflation you have a point but when you adjust for inflation all the rift raft drops out. Also Titanic took home 11 Academy awards in 1997 including Best Picture and best picture. The movie spent 15 weeks at #1 in the box office, shit movies don't occupy the top spot that long, the drop off quick after the first couple of weeks. Titanic has help up fine over time.

Aliens is still a classic sci-fi movie and is always a fun watch especially the special edition with all the cut scenes. T2 is also a great movie and is a very strong movie for the overall franchise. If you don't like the movie's then don't watch them. Everybody like throwing bricks at #1.

I'm not a huge Titanic fan, but I definitely wouldn't say it's a "shit movie." Aliens, as mentioned, is still entertaining, and T2--in my opinion--is also still a great movie.

Who the fuck cares how many mindless dopes love the shit out of it? OF the top 20 adjusted for inflation, zero would make my top 10 list. Closest would be Gone with the Wind, which is definitely a top 50 for me... You have to go all the way down to #22 to get to Godfather, which is an outside for top 25 for me. Most critics would tend to agree with me. Movies I like are consistently on top 100 lists of various serious critics. We may not agree 100% of the time, and we may even disagree dramatically on certain things, but we employ similar thought processes and methods for evaluating films (or whatever). Critics are educated and trained, and most importantly, passionate. They see many more times the amount of films the average Joe sees, and they see more types. They are trained in history and the successful ones have a great eye for the evolution of cinema; they understand significance of things casual moviegoers overlook. Critics top choice lists and box office gross lists rarely mingle. Now to my point.

Aliens is a giant piece of garbage that was not only a bad film, but a film that RUINED the entire mythology of the "perfect organism". It took everything that made the original film compelling, and turned it on its ear. People liked it for precisely the reasons KT stated were bad aspects of it. Paper thin caricatures, shallow story, over the top action sequences. People like it because Bill Paxton's performance as a whiney, shit-talking, pussy stole every scene he was in. After that, there isn't much. Think about any of it for a few moments and it all collapses. Nuke it from orbit? Fuckin' A!
